: Loc Right Questions
jeeppartz 09-27-2002, 04:05 PM Well I got the loc right (1510)and the 4.62s in and I like the extra oomph .However my rear (with the loc right ) clicks all the time , even when going straight . I expect it to click and clack in turns but is this normal when going straight ?I also have some understeer ,but I think thats normally associated with this model .I have always run posis in the past so this is new to me . I saw when I did my search that a bent housing can cause some problems but I measured my housing and it is straight . So is this out of whack or am I just not used to the Loc Right yet ? thanks ,Greg
mikrosilakhan 09-27-2002, 04:51 PM Its definatley EFFED up dude and dont drive it anymore till you fix it.. My guess it its put together wrong , most likey the springs?? Extreme tire pressure differense can do it to.

10-4 on that. We put the low-buck lockrite in my girlfriend's Sami's rear (stock 3.73) and it's street manners are great, minor clicking heard ONLY on pavement TURNS.
Bill4rest 09-27-2002, 06:01 PM Yip Time to pull it out and put the cheaper lockright in, your side couplers are shot......and your axle "maybe" bent as well:(
Pappa Smurf 09-27-2002, 06:26 PM my dad has had his for like ten years no problems:p
jones 09-29-2002, 11:12 AM My friend's lockrite ratcheted while driving straight. He had a bent housing.:D

The 1510 is the cheaper of the 2 the one with side couplings if the 1530. Although the stock side gears could be worn
jeeppartz 09-29-2002, 08:30 PM Well I have driven the Sammi some and I can make the noise go away by driving towards the right . Maybe at a 10 degree slant or so .So I am going to swap the rear tires from side to side and see if it makes the noise going left .If so that should mean the o.d. of the tires are different ? Good science /bad science ? I put a straight edge on the housing and I cant see any bend . So any other ideas ? How do I check the sidegears ? Thanks for all the ideas .And it is definitley releasing in turns as I have every old person in my neighborhood pissed off from the noise !
pretty hard to tell if a housings bent with a straight edge only real way is to take all apart and check it using an alignment bar like the guys that narrow housings have.
TNToy 09-29-2002, 09:49 PM There is a similar lockright available for the V6 toy diff that uses the stock side gears. I bought one to run in my rear end, but ended up not installing it b/c the side gears were too worn. Since the price for the lockright and two new side gears was like $50 less than the detroit... i now run a detroit.
SilverZuk 09-30-2002, 08:46 AM I've been running lock rights front and rear for about two years on my stock axles. (Had others in different trucks.)
If my hubs are in but t-case in 2wd I get constant clicking.
The only clicking in the rear is when I'm turning with the clutch disengaged.
If the clutch is engaged it lunges a little and some time pops.
Under any torque, the thing does not unlock at all, causing tire scuffing.
The constant clicking in the rear would concern me enough to take it apart.
Was there ever a resolution to this problem?
I recently bought some 4.62 3rds and today installed them. Before I installed the rear, no problem. After I get clicking all the time.
I pulled the carrier with locker inside out of the original 3rd and stuck it on the ring gear and installed it in the new 3rd. I used all the tools, dial indicator, torque wrench, cleaned everything before putting it together.
Could I have a bent axle or tube that didn't cause a problem until I went with the lower gears? I can't figure out why it would start clicking, because I didn't pull the lockers out of the carrier at all. The front seems fine.
Anyway, just checking for any info. If I grind them off I'll just buy a mini-spool.
LiftedSuzuki101 10-23-2005, 11:03 PM I'd like to know whats up too(in the rear). Since day 1 I've had minor pops from time to time going straight and they have progressively gotten worse to where on a trip today it popped about every 2 seconds under load going down the highway. Its really pissing me off and every time it pops it jerks slightly to the left. Looks like its time to pull the rear end apart again. The problem is a while back I blew my 3rd, so we replaced it with a stock axle that was given to us when we bought another zuk so we didnt even know the condition of it, had the locker installed by a local mechanic, and threw it all back together. Someone suggested sidegears, pretty sure I dont have a bent axle cus I dont really hammer on mine and its mostly a pavement princess/dd to school an work. I think I'm gonna leave it parked an drive the '76 Gran Torino till I get it resolved. How do I check to see if my side gears are worn? I wish I would have installed the locker myself so I would know how everything went together. Any good Install instructions on the net if I cant find the box? Thanks -David-
and every time it pops it jerks slightly to the left.
Hi David,
Normally getting this kind of behavior is due to the tire pressure not being exactly the same in both sides. Sometimes you will get a pop or a clunk, but that's normal. Sounds like the rear end breaks or something, but completely normal.
On mine, I'm just getting the constant clicking. Normally you only get the clicking while turning. In this case all I've done was move the carrier (with locker inside) to a new 3rd. Everything else is the same. So maybe the 3rd member is tweaked? I'm going to swap front to back to see if it fixes the problem.
LiftedSuzuki101 10-24-2005, 03:11 PM Just drained the oil from rear end... its more metallic than my paint  Somethings goin on lol. And the tire pressure is the same in all 4 as I already checked a few things :D . Mine isnt quite the "constant clicking" like yours, I know how its supposed to sound around corners and this isnt a click, this is a BOOM BOOM BOOM  :( . Gotta be to work in 20 mins so I'll tear into it tomorrow after school and keep ya posted. Got another 3rd ready to do a locker transplant lol... hope I install it right, any tips or instructions on how to install? I know it came with some but I'm at a loss as to where the box went:( . Thanks -David-

It's very, very easy to install. Just make sure the springs and studs are in the right places. You can download the install from their site...(google search it).
belleville95 10-24-2005, 09:49 PM If the circumference of the tires is not the same then clicking will occur. Both tires can be stamped with the same size designation yet have a different circumference. Racers use a pull tape with a very flexible blade to measure tire circumference.

I'll check it, but these are brand new Super Swampers as of two months ago. Also, the only thing I changed in the truck is the 3rd member from the stock 86 to a Sidekick 4.62. After changing the 3rd, that's when it started.
LiftedSuzuki101 10-25-2005, 07:29 AM Hell... maybe I'll just weld my rear end, then it'd be said and done and I could forget bout it... till that blows anyway :shaking: lol. Also be eatin up tires so I donno . Thanks for the imput guys :) -David-

Sami is too light to really chew up your tires to bad with a welded rear. I've been running mine like that for almost 5 years, and have yet to have a set of tires show any kind of excessive wear from the locker. Just my .02!
Snakeman 10-25-2005, 05:12 PM My front w/ 4.62's and a lockrite will pop under load (I'm assuming worn sidegears or the brass behind sidegears)
But when in 2wd and the hubs locked in will pop loudly when turning, even barely turning, and greatly reduces my turning radius. Its like the front doesn't want to unlock when turning in 2wd. If this normal?
Vehicle specs:
87 tintop
1.6 16v
stock 5spd
4.9 case
TT yj conversion
sidekick rear w/ spool - 4.62
sami front, lockrite - 4.62
Would a bent housing not want to unlock even in 2wd, or is this a common traight? I just bought it about 2 weeks ago and don't know much about lockrites.
LiftedSuzuki101 10-25-2005, 05:51 PM Decided to buy a axle puller today... best money we've spent. Instead of bashin at the axle from the back side for hours... bolted that thing up, 2 tiny wacks and it was OUT! Couldnt believe it. Paid for itself with just the one side being pulled. Anyway HUGE rains and wind postponed my teardown for tonight, resume tomorrow with hopefully better weather :shaking:. Maybe I'll just get this rear welded and throw the locker up front eventually if I ever tear into it  Choices choices... dad keeps tryin to tell me its a safety issue with the rear welded, told him its prob better than it engaging and rodeo'in my ass around a corner :flipoff2: LOL -David-
S.T.F.U. 10-26-2005, 06:25 AM http://www.richmondgear.com/0002pdfs/8221004.pdf THE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS!
LiftedSuzuki101 10-26-2005, 07:43 AM Just found this in the FAQ last night, most detailed writeup I've seen on how to dig into your 3rd member. I know the instructions are for a spool but if you can follow most of em on how to get it out and start diggin into your spider gears. I learned a lot! http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,9054.0.html -David-
LiftedSuzuki101 10-26-2005, 01:38 PM Ok just pulled the 3rd out, looks perfectly fine, expecting somethins wrong with the inner spiders or somethin. Cleaned the whole housing on the inside and is awaiting a 3rd member install. Said to hell with it and dropped the spare 3rd I had off at the local muffler guy that welded my buddys rear end. Gonna pick it up tonight :D. We'll take the old 3rd apart and see what was up with the locker soon. -David-
LiftedSuzuki101 10-30-2005, 10:01 PM Ok got everything buttoned back together and brakes bled yesterday. Love being back on the road, love not having the damn thing pop and jerk off to the left anymore, and love the predictability of it locking in around a corner... cus its always locked! lol

I'm debating if that is going to be my case or not... first thing I did when turning out of my driveway was lay down a nice rubber track from my inside tire , guess time will tell! -David-
