Black Friday I can get it for $599 - seems like a decent deal (and yes, I realize it's probably more of a 16 gun safe than 24 like they advertise).

I'm betting a safe like that uses sheet metal and not plate steel. Still, it probably offers more protection and rigidity than those flimsy gun locker type boxes.


I like Liberty safes and Sergeant and Greenleaf combo locks.

I just picked up a similar safe at Sutherlands out here for $604 out the door. That seems like a good deal. Mine was branded winchester but made by Granite Security and a (up to) 24 gun safe, but it sure would be packing them on top of each other. I have 10 in it and cant see it holding 24, maybe 24 10/22s with no scopes........:laughing:

Oh I just realized it has internal hinges...I'd have to pass on that style. I prefer hinge pins on the outside, more secure & you can remove the door to move the safe by yourself.
If you get it...NEVER let the door over swing out hard, it can bend those internal mounts if it does, then your door is screwed.

Overall its not bad for securing your firearms.

How are external hinges more secure? :confused:

One thing I liked about this one was the fire rating - most safes in that price range just say "fire resistant".

Im not against anyone wanting that style of door. I myself am not a fan of them since they are not a servicable door.

Exposed door hinges/Hidden hinges
This makes the safe door removable, which makes it lighter to move or ship. Unlike hidden hinges, exposed hinges allows the safe door to be accidentally slammed open, without damaging the hinges, as well as, being able to open a full 180 deg. The only advantage to hidden hinges is the cosmetics of it. Exposed hinges do not compromise security

I'll be honest - the safe will probably end up in the shop, where there are enough tools of destruction that if someone *really* wanted in, they could get in, given enough time.

Yes, I saw their flyer too... however that safe doesn't have a fire rating, just says "fire resistant". I think Dick's safes don't get a fire or water rating until you get up to their $799 and up safes.

Why are you concerned about the fire rating? If a gun goes through a fire in a safe I probably would not want to use it anyway. I just got my safe to hopefully keep people from easily stealing my stuff. I just have a stack-on sheet metal safe with a combo lock.

This will be in my shop, and a 30 minute fire rating should be plenty to protect the contents (may not just be guns) from the damage of a fire in a steel sided structure like my shop.

If I just wanted to "lock them up", I would go your route and get the stack-on gun cabinet or something similar.
