The question is a trick. The property that you want to look at is modulus of elasticity, and it is essentially the same for all BCC steels (all of the steels listed). It can not be changed by heat treating. So the answer is it doesn't matter (that is a hard thing for an engineer to say). If an interview if the candidate can identify the property to look at that is all I really care about, but it is nice if they happen to know the modulus is the same for all those alloys, that would indicate they have a little bit of practical experience. On a metalurgist straight out of school about 50% get it right. With a couple years experience 90% get it right.

The smartest guy I have ever met looked at me like I was a moron when I asked him this question, then he explained the above and went on to discuss localized yielding due to residual stresses in the weld area etc... We moved him across the country and hired him right away.

You know... I just read the thread with this question the other day and I really was wondering what the answer was... Why the hell is it hidden in the test forum?
