: Mrs. SSGTWC's Scout II build

Well I figured I'd start a build thread, after all these years of contributing absolutely nothing to this forum. So...since 2006, when my wife first met me and discovered that I'm an International Harvester enthusiast, she has been wanting a built Scout II of her own. So I after finally taking back control of the shop, we finally started the teardown of the 77 I acquired a few years back. She wants this to be a project for her and I to work together on. Yep, she likes to turn wrenches as much as I do. The plan so far is to make it into a decent wheeler, but at the same time make it road worthy as well. She wants to be able to drive this everyday. Now this isn't going to be another 4 link build with another type of engine, yada... yada... but this will be done on a very tight budget. So tight that you won't be able to stick a needle up it's ass! So here is a run down on what we'll start with:

Axles:
The Dana 44, & 60 that I have under my T-all (since I have the Dana 60F and will have the 14 bolt)

Engine:
Either a 345 or 390 w/ an Edelbrock 1406, HEI dist. and still not sure what else.

Transmission:
Thinkin I'll stick with the 727 with a lower gear set. I'll rebuild this myself

Transfer:
Dana 300

This rig is going to be gutted, and rebuilt from the ground up. And, of course I'll keep it updated with pics.

After clearing the floor, we cleaned out the back of the Scout from all the parts inside.

Next weekend will be spent bringing the T-all down.

I know you just started yesterday. :flipoff2:

Getting the wife involved is a big plus, plus she doesn't complain as much about how much you are in the garage.
her: Whatcha doing?
me: Surfing CL looking for some "new to me" used tires for the Scout
her: Why don't you just get some new ones?
me: I can get used ones cheaper, new tries are going to be $1000+
her: Don't buy some worn out crap, get new ones.
me: OK
Few days later...FedEx guys drops off 5 new 37" BFG KM2 :grinpimp:

Update:

Got the truck and trailer reserved today. About time I bring the T-all down.

Had an interesting conversation the other day with a feller selling a 345.

Me: What intake does it have(like it matters)? Squarebore or a Spreadbore?

Him: Uhhh...I don't know

Me: Oh it's easy...if the back holes are bigger than the front it's a spreadbore. If they are the same then it's a square bore.

Him: Oh.....then it's a squarebore.

Me: Ok, so what are you wanting for the engine?

Him: $300

Me: (after almost spitting beer through the nose) Ya know that these are usually going for a $100 at the most right.? They are few and far between around here, but nobody wants them.

Him: Uhhh....well....I guess $175 then.

Me: Hmm

Him: Oh I forgot to tell you that the heads are off.

Me: Really?? How long have they been off, and do you have the steel head gaskets still?

Him: Uhh..no

Me: ( I go into all details involved with after market gaskets)

Him: Well I guess I can come down to $125

Me: Well I think about this and I'll get back to you

What I need to do is visit with all the other Scout owners here in town and see if they have 345s sittin around.

Another thing the surprised me looking through CL...Nobody has any 14 bolts for sale.

Finally brought the T-all down from Phillipsburg. That wasn't fun by any means. We had a small snow storm move through yesterday, with some pretty good north winds to go along with. Top speed was 40mph. That fucking sucked ass! Normally it's a 3 hour drive but this time it was 5 1/2.

Also, my measurements were dead nuts on with the trailer. There was no room for error.

Didn't get to the Scout this weekend, had drill.

Update 12/18/09:

Have to move the Scout back out of the shop this weekend. My landlords are finally getting the electrician to come out and install the 220 OUTLET.:shaking: I wanted one by the compressor, and over by the welding bench but, my landlord won't open the checkbook for it. What I don't get though, is they are giving me a 25' extension cord, again :shaking:. So seeings how I have a 75' to 100' (IFRR) extension cord anyway, I'll put the outlets where I want them. Another cool thing is I get brand new lights, I think he said they work without fluttering down to 0 degrees. I guess they are aren't cheap, either. But, it's still cool that I finally have everything working in the shop now. I hope to make more progress with the Scout this weekend.

Well I finally got the landlord and electrician to come out and install the 220 and new lights. Of course, it was while I was at work. So I got one outlet by the panel....yippie. At least I still had my $100 extension cord, so I piggie backed off of the outlet and ran the 3 phase over the shop doors. But I'm really diggin the new lights. So bright in there now that I need to clean my toolbox now.:flipoff2:

Update on the project:

Started on dropping the axles, and of course running into rusted ass shit. Damn I need a torch set.

Tomorrow I'll finish dropping the axles, and get them posted on CL.

Yeah, ChiScouter suggested that when I picked up the axle a year ago. It's definitely an option. I mean we will have to get new tires and rims for the Scout, so I could swap these tires over to the Scout, and get H1's and new tires for the T-all. Anybody out there have $1200 they could loan me? I'm good for it. :flipoff2:

406 YJ is just North of Wichita (which ain't too far from you IIRC) and has KILLER deals on H1's (8 ($40) and 12 ($95) bolt) along with 90% or better GoodYear 37x12.50's. ($75) Since you don't need them recentered you could slide out of there on the cheap.:D

Yeah, no kiddin'.

If'n yer workin' on some old rusted IH iron, an O/A torch set is mandatory requirement.

SSGTWC, glad to see you're using wood cribbing instead of cinderblocks, Drive some 2.5"/3" drywall screws to hold your blocks together.
[safety rant]Take note noobs and future Darwin Award nominees, cinderblocks holding up a rig is bad ju-ju...cinder blocks can/will crack, crumble, fall apart and crush you if you are under the truck when it happens [/safety rant]

Been workin a lot lately, plus being down with the FLU for 2 weeks. But last weekend, I was able to get the Scout almost completely gutted. Found out the PO replaced the floor boards at one point. Well not really replaced. They just took 2 pieces of galvanized sheet metal and welded them on top of the originals. And they didn't allow access to the front body mount bolts. Thanks dickheads!:mad3:

Yesterday I finally got it all sold, plus all her knitting machines. Been trying to sell that stuff for almost a year. Anyway, once I get that out of the way, I'll take those seats and replace the bench seat in the T-all with them.

well....sort of an update on the SII project. Talking with Buck Dodson, it looks likes we'll have the D-300. Just need to go out and look for the jeep tail section for the TF727.

Also here in a few weeks, I'll be getting the parts ordered for the 1 ton swaps into the T-all. That way I can teach Mrs. SSGTWC how to mock up the suspension on the SII. Plus, show her how much we'll have to trim the fenders to clear 35"s.
