a buddy of mine asked me if i could help him get his 1999 cherokee classic running again. he pulled the head to replace the lifters and put it all back together and it wont run. i come in here. first of all he doesnt know much about engines at all its a 4.0 and its all back together but as it turns over you can hear compression leaking into the over flow bottle it bubbles like crazy. what would cause it he has a new headgasket and all other gaskets are new could the head have been torqued incorrectly or not tight enough to make it leak
Obviously a leak in between cooling and cylinder.
Do a compression test, reseat head and retourque,
Compression test again.

Did he clean the block and head off really well to get the old head gasket off?

to tell you the truth he had never done it before he bought a haynes book or something of the sort and set off he said some of the head bolts he couldnt torque so he got them as tight as he thought they should be. so obviously he had no clue what he was doing but he got it apart and back together without any left over parts. and he had no clue about how to set valves either so im gonna address the whole thing tomorrow again
