: Spider Lake Executive Shittah!!!
Disco 09-28-2002, 04:26 PM OK, I was talkin to Kevin last week and it looks like I am going to be in charge of moving the Executive Shittah at Spider Lake again this year. I need a few brave souls to help me dig a new hole, line it with rocks, and clean and repair the shittah. Who's in??
BTW: Turd Patrollers are held in the highest of regard. Hence, I will be providing special beverages for my crew. :) Last year the person I saw puke was Kevin and that was just talkin about Turds. :D:D
COME AWWWNNNN!!!!!
I can't make it down for the clean up but I will be more than willing to test your facilities next summer. :D

We re-named it last year at the clean-up. I think it was either Paul or Steve that came up with the name. I might even have to make a sign for it this year. :D:D

No need - this one is holding a up LOT better than the crappy one at Ellis. Even with the shotgun blast through it.
Paul
Keith 09-30-2002, 10:37 AM Paul, are you saying I might see you on the trail this year????????
nasvik 09-30-2002, 11:38 AM Can you imagine? With my budget this year, the only trips I'm making are work weekends. At least I get out sometimes..... and for the right reasons.
Paul

I'm curious -- they are of the same basic design. Sounds like the one I built in 2000 is holding up better than the ones Erik and I slapped together in 2001?
What's the difference?
All that I can remember is that I painted the one from 2000, otherwise they were pretty much the same?

nasvik 09-30-2002, 01:04 PM Ah yes... builder's pride.... :D:flipoff2:
Metal sides at Spider, wood (I think) at Ellis. The one at Ellis had a caved in throne when I saw it this early summer. Didn't look vandalized.

UGET IT 09-30-2002, 02:27 PM Whats up Turd Patrolees! Thanks for posting this info Disco. Heres whats going to happen everyone, and if you dont understand give me a call at home during the evening and I can break it down for ya.
I will be going in to Spider the 18th in the evening. Saturday morning (7:00am to 8:00am) Maniac and I will be having a Cleanup sign-in at Spider Lake this will be Disco's crew and at least 10 others to assist in picking up Turds in that area. Disco will also be incharge of the Spider Shitter relocation and beautifcation :*) For those going to Spider I will be above the Lil Sluice in POR camp at the sign-in table. Make sure you see me 1st thing in the morning for bags and gloves. Please dont forget to sigh-in you'll miss out on the raffle ticket and you must sign-in to get one. ( Actully after bring back your trash or turds we'll give you your ticket.) If your in Turd Patrol at Spider listen to Disco hes a Veteren and is taken orders from the Turd Commander.....Thats me fawkers!
There will be another sign in on Saturday morning at Loon Lake in the regular spot below the Dam (Parking Area). Jeff Fretwell and Tim Downs will be conducting that sign-in. For the Turd duties from Loon to Spider the lead person is Paul Nasvik. He will need at least 5 people to assist in the rebuild of the Ellis Ckeek shitter. All others need to pick up turds and trash all the way to Spider Lake. If your picking up Turds at Ellis or continuing to Spider and picking up turds listen to Paul Nasvik he too is a major cleanup veteren and represents P.O.R. so be nice.
Remember everyone just because you have the Turd Patrol duties dosnt mean you are excluded from picking up trail trash......we are picking up EVERYTHING considered garbage. Both sign-ins should be completed no later than 9:00am so we can get in a full work day!
We really have some awesome raffle items this year so be perpared.............this is just a short list of em
CTM
Shaffers Offroad
Bent & Twisted
Central 4WD
Centerfolds........................
J.E. Reel Driveline
High Angle Driveline

randii 09-30-2002, 02:39 PM Metal sides at Spider, wood (I think) at Ellis.
Kinda fuzzy, but IIRC they were wood-fronted, but corrugated tin sides for all?
The one at Ellis had a caved in throne when I saw it this early summer. Didn't look vandalized.
I'm guessing some :girly: used it last and left the seat down. :P Winter snow-loads and all (why we didn't put roofs on 'em ITFP).
Next design revision will include cutting the lid off the toilet seat so that it is just a ring... no way to leave the seat down then. Still working on the perfect design... Per-unit costs are down under $50 with all new parts(cheaper with recycled wood).

Rubicrawler 09-30-2002, 02:44 PM Disco- I'm in too! The Dysfunctional Crew will be well represented
UGET IT 09-30-2002, 02:44 PM Randii, If you can get that material list together we can get these materials together before the run. Email to me and I'll take care of it.

nasvik 09-30-2002, 02:46 PM Randii - does that mean you'll be bringing a replacement up for the Ellis shitter? :D
Kevin - You better get me up early on Saturday because I'm staying at Spider. :flipoff2:
Paul
UGET IT 09-30-2002, 02:53 PM Well we can work something out then. Can you then take care of the Ellis Shitter? I was going to have Flashlight Man do it originally but I can't get in touch with him.

What exactly are you making happen, there, Barney? :p
'Repair' of these things is gonna be dicey -- to keep material costs down, we ripped 2x4s into 2x2s. IMHO, if the frame is shot, the whole thing is likely shot. If you want to try to repair what's there, you could probably sister in some 2x2s to brace the frame and sheet some new 1/2" plywood over failed sheeting, all stuck together with a whole box of fasteners. By the time you buy that, you're halfway to the cost of a new Throne.
How's about we just provide a new outhouse and just strap the old one to Paul's Heep for him to keep as a remembrance? :flipoff2:

kodak 09-30-2002, 06:07 PM Let me get this strait. to save money a 2x4 was riped to a 2x2
over the winter the snow pack had it's way with this sorry excuse for a shittah!
Make it a 2x4 frame and a high pitch roof. or no roof at all
Then it would last more than 2 months before Mother nature has her way with it.
It doesn't look like money is being saved if they can't survice the snow and wind of the winter.
an if you all think I am off base here :flippoff2:

I'm with you, Dan. FWIW, I have some left over 2x4s and 1/4" plywood scraps from the last project I've been working on. I'll see if there's enough for most of an outhouse.
Paul
randii 09-30-2002, 07:08 PM Let me get this strait. to save money a 2x4 was riped to a 2x2
Yup. I'm partially funding an Internet venture, building a ridiculous 4x4 mongrel, and trying to stay married. :p Funds are not in huge supply...
I've helped the Pirates with an average of one outhouse per year since the turn of the century -- how many have you delivered, Meester Kodak? :flipoff2:
over the winter the snow pack had it's way with this sorry excuse for a shittah!
With no roof, snow-loading is really pretty minimal... 2 out of 3 of the Thrones are still standing... one for three years (the Executive Shittah). Keep in mind that this is a short-term solution --- we can't build permanent outhouses in the national forest. They HAVE to be temporary.
I'll betcha a sixpack of Sierra Nevada that you can't deliver an outhouse (and a sales-slip for proof) under $50. We're not talking raiding the neighbors addition project, we're talking new stuff, bought at full list. The first Throne cost about $70, and I have worked the cost down...
So whattayasay -- wanna have a friendly competition for cheapest outhouse? :p Could *you* be the next Plumber of the Rubicon?

Keith 09-30-2002, 08:04 PM Maybe there is a rockcrawler on this BB that happens to be a contractor or somewhere along those lines, that may be a be able to donate a bit of material to put toward an out house. Maybe even someone in the fencing industry that could provide some metal fence posts to use instead of wood studs.
kodak 09-30-2002, 09:05 PM wow Randii, Did I hit a nerve with you?
We all upgrade our rigs to survive the trail.
But the shittah has to stay the frail cost effective solution?
As for how many I have towed in, I had a trailer for the 2000 clean up to load up some. but they were all loaded and headin out by the time I signed up. Oh well
I have some 2X4 that I can donate. and a few boxs of screws.
someone could donate some siding and there we go...
Then we could drink the Sierra Nevada..

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!! I appreciate all the sponsers contributing to the raffle, but what about the hookups for materials? I see in another thread that trash bags are being donated. Let's get some more shitters built.
I'm unemployed, but I've got some wood to donate (don't get excited Vova:flipoff2:) I think I can put together most of a shitter with the materials in my garage. Anyone else?

I guess I just hate to be called cheap. :( I think the outhouses have worked pretty well... FWIW, I have been kicking around the idea of a Crapper Contest for a couple of years. The Rubicon is not unique in its need for cheap, short-term solutions for outhouses... wouldn't it be cool to get a bunch of creative folks coming up with cheap outhouses?
If its your dollars, you can make it as stout as you want! I'll use it for the intended purpose, regardless, :flipoff2:
Then we could drink the Sierra Nevada.
Alright, I'll buy for you, me, and Nasvik -- the first six is on me for getting sand in my shorts. ...but I'll have another six available for anyone who can show me a receipt for under $50 (rules above).
Dan, IIRC, the crappers have a 3x3' footprint, and are 6' tall. One sheet of plywood is enough to cover the front, create a floor, and top as well as front for the goodies -- and a whole bunch of triangular gussets for every corner. Frame it together, then saber-saw a door opening (and the requisite moon cut-out). I build the 'goodie box' a little heavier, since that's all that really has to handle much weight. There are some b-i-g fellas on the trail...

Just be sure to make a cutout in the front of the seat so my weiner does not get hung up.
ErikB 10-02-2002, 07:17 PM The thrones Randii & I built for Ellis and Wintercamp in 2000 were identical and the one at Wintercamp was holding up fine last I saw it. I think somebody just FUBARed the one at Ellis. The only thing I can see maybe needing strengthening might be a 2x4 for a rear support for the seat instead of a 2x2 (although it wasn't the 2x2 that even broke on the one @ Ellis, it was the screws for some reason). Last time I was up there I brought my cordless drill, screws and a little wood to try to fix that thing, but I was worse than I had anticipated... :(
I've got a couple of pics of those ones on my puter at home, so I'll post them for a general idea of the design.
BTW, all of them had corrugated metal siding w/ a plywood door. The metal ends up being cheaper because the plywood ends leaving too much waste for the size/shape the sides end up.
Each shitta required one sheet of plywood, 1.5 (or was it 2?) sheets of 2'x12' steel siding, hinges, a lid, some 2x4's (all of which were ripped to 2x2), and some screws. IIRC, randii spent like $60-75 for the two of them, and we had several 2x4's left over.
The only thing I remember that we thought that we would do differently was to make each side an inch or two less than 3' so that the sheet metal would wrap all the way around better. I think we ended up using one extra 2x4 to cover up the gap.
I think a 2' wide chunk of corrugated roofing is actually 26" or so wide? So if you make each side 34" and overlap each one like an inch, four 2' (25"x4=100") chunks wrapped around three 34" (102") will just about do it w/o a gap because of the width of the 2x4's on the ends... or something like that... and I guess that means two full 2x12' sheets for each shitter too (I was thinking 1.5 for some reason).
randii 10-02-2002, 10:41 PM The only thing I can see maybe needing strengthening might be a 2x4 for a rear support for the seat instead of a 2x2.
Yeah -- IIRC, I built the seatbox stronger on the first one... probably won't hurt, since they are short runs of 2x4s.
BTW, all of them had corrugated metal siding w/ a plywood door.
This was the cheapest and most durable sheathing I could find... I'd love to just wrap them with a tarp, but it needs to be slightly more idiot-proof than that. 1/2-inch steel plate would be more idiot-proof, even bullet-proof. Some idiot shotgunned one two years back.
The only thing I remember that we thought that we would do differently was to make each side an inch or two less than 3' so that the sheet metal would wrap all the way around better. I think we ended up using one extra 2x4 to cover up the gap.
Good memory -- I'd forgotten about that seam up the back!
Post the pix!

ErikB 10-03-2002, 12:04 AM Here we go...
Hey- look at that... I DID use a 2x4 for the back of the seat support. I knew that wasn't what broke. It had to have been intentionally FUBARed. The screws shouldn't have just sheared off. I guess you could stick a couple of 2x2's right under that 2x4 going down to the base as supports instead of just leaving it up to the screws to support all the weight...
ErikB 10-03-2002, 12:06 AM Yeah you're right, the extra 2x4 was right up the back...
ErikB 10-03-2002, 12:14 AM I calculated that three 12' 2x4's will do it with a little left over, so here's the shopping list:
3- 2x4x12'
1- sheet of ply wood (at least 1/2")
2- 2x12' sheets of corrugated roofing
1- toilet seat
2- hinges
screws
fab up a latch out of some scrap wood, or spring or spring for an actual hook & eye or something.
Here's the one @ winter camp, brand spankin new.
ErikB 10-03-2002, 12:29 AM One note on the plywood- Its probably a good idea to buy the stuff that has more than 3 plys (cheap Home Depot CDX). That stuff seems to warp really badly as I noticed on the one at Ellis.
Preferrably, get the 5-ply stuff instead.
BTW, here's the new one @ Ellis. That big rock is what we hit when we tried to dig the hole, so we dug around it and winched the SOB out. :D
Notice the short sleeves- its hard to believe that it got SO FRICKEN COLD AND WINDY just a few hours later!
WheelingPiazza 10-03-2002, 06:07 AM Count me in for the Executive shitter. We will dig a bigger better hole this year..
Dan-H 10-03-2002, 09:50 PM if we can get one built, do we want it up there cleanup weekend, or should it wait until spring?
the thinking here was one less winter means it will last longer.
let me know.
I"ve collected for *ZERO COST* just about everything except siding to build at least one shitta.
RCRC is gonna have a small throne building party but we still need to find a way to get it up there.
ErikB 10-09-2002, 05:53 AM OK, I'm bringing up a new Throne. I'm gonna have to strap it to the top of my Runner to get it up there, but I'm not sure how well that will work on the trail...
Anyway, somebody in charge figure out where it should go and let me know. :)
nasvik 10-09-2002, 07:53 AM Ok. So Dan and Eric have are building one each. Do we need more? I was planning on putting one together, but will save the materials for next time they're needed.
As far as getting it there goes, build the walls and assemble on site. carry the walls on the top of your cage/roof/whatever. I was going to bring one from San Francisco like that, so I'm sure it would make it from El Dorado Hills. :D

Dan-H 10-09-2002, 09:49 AM randii and I are gonna build it at his place this weekend and he will get it to the spillway at loon.
I'm coming in from the tahoe side friday, and since randii is *still* without a 4x4 (station wagon don't count) we need a way to get it from the spillway to its new home.
I spoke to dog walker about this last night and he is aware that a shitta is coming up to loon and needs a ride from the spillway to its new home in the woods.

When will it be at Loon...
Could be as early as this Sunday the 13th, since I couldn't spring myself outta work for Supercrawl, I will try to make it up to Rubicon for the FOTR work day.
....does Randii need a ride for the weekend?
Probably -- I may just hoof it.

As far as what you should be bringing; shovels, rock bars and what-ever else you think we might need. If someone has some scrap wood we might need to reinforce parts of the shittah. Other than that we are ready to GET IT!!!!
Thanks for everyones extra effort to make this the best Shittah around.
BTW: If anyone has anything they want to add to the list feel free. Maybe some paint would be nice to spruce it up a little. :D A couple of car air fresheners?? :D:D

Ya see.... that's crap. And exactly what's wrong with your $50 Challenge. I've got enough lumber around the garage from past projects to build an outhouse (minus the seat), and I'm sure other people do too. Dan said he's doing his at zero cost.
What we really need is a better thread for this kind of thing - one that calls specifically for materials, tools, etc. 14,000 people have to be able to come up with some lumber and a toilet seat.
Paul
randii 10-09-2002, 06:38 PM Ya see.... that's crap.
Well we are speaking of shitters. :grinpimp:
More power to you if you have enough scrap to build a crapper -- If you build it, I'll test-squat it. :goofball: I'll even bring the White Cloud.
Sigh. :shaking: People get lost in the nuts and bolts of the rules instead of digging in and designing from scratch, with no assumptions. A design challenge, in its purest form, is a clean-sheet opportunity to try new things. I've personally pondered, priced, and built a few corrugated-steel-covered wood-framed thrones. I just bet there's a better and cheaper way... geodesic dome, haybale, concrete/foam, canvas, inflatable, I dunno... but I'd like to see somebody develop it, and I'd like to personally take advantage of the savings. Mebbe making them cheaper would encourage more folks to build 'em, and our trails would wind up looking less like an overfilled septic field.

FYI and FWIW, Home Despot sells plastic ass-rings for $7 that hold up to the weather well.
As noted earlier in this thread, cutting the lid off and leaving only the ring might help minimize snow-loading.

True. But how many people read without registering?

ErikB 10-10-2002, 06:32 PM Detail:
http://home.off-road.com/~bibelheimer/images/temp/chrome2.JPG
Here's my parts list
(2) 2x12' corrugated roofing- $9.49
(3) 2x4 x12'- $3.20
(1) 1/2" CDX plywood, 5-ply- $11.79
(1) plastic toilet seat- $5.98
(1) gal of paint- $11.95
(1) disposable roller- $2.27
(1) dead bolt thingy- $2.94
assorted drywall screws, about $3.00 worth
Tax- $3.92
TOTAL---------------> $55.54
That's a bit more than I had hoped to spend, but I bought more expensive plywood, a latch (instead of making one), and paint. Hopefully the ~$18 or so of extra cost in plywood and paint will help it last longer though. I painted everything on all sides before assembly too.
So without the upgrades, I could have done it for about $34 total, which is pretty cheap. :)
FYI- HD here doesn't carry 12' lengths of steel roofing any more (10' max). I found some at Lowe's though.

Sweet work, Erik, especially with the snazzy paint job -- what do you drink, I'm buying!
Thanks for the tip on locating the steel, that's still the cheapest/toughest stuff I've seen... the plywood always kills the bank.

UGET IT 10-14-2002, 01:40 PM Well I guess these shitters are built! Thanks to all who did it! Where are these shitters going? are they replacing the existing ones? Can the following peolple please contact me:
Randii
Eric B.
Disco (Tim)
Nasvik
I really need to talk to you guys before Friday to organize the Turd portion of the cleanup. So far this is who I have assigned to a certain area:
Disco:
Executive shitter removal, relocation & repair @ Spider Lake. After the sign-in on Sat morning at Spider Disco will get about 5 guys to help out with that project.
Timbo P.O.R. :
Tim will be heading up the turd patrol for the Spider Lake area and surrouding areas. The remainder of the signed in people will work with Tim and be split into parties.
Nasvik:
Paul will be getting up butt-ass early at Spider and proceeding to Ellis Creek to take care of the Relocation & repair of the Ellis Creek shitter. Paul will get about 5 people to do this work as well, more if needed........
Randii: ??????? You tell me? Contact me and we can put you where you need to be, hopefully as a Team Leader.
Erik B: ??????? You tell me? I guess your hauling in a shitter but where is it going? Contact me and I'll put you where you need to be.
Thanks Everyone,
Tarzan
randii 10-14-2002, 01:58 PM Where are these shitters going? are they replacing the existing ones?
I've always left that up to the Pirates, with only the request that they let me know where the thrones go, so I can find them when I hear the call of nature. :p
Randii: ??????? You tell me? Contact me and we can put you where you need to be, hopefully as a Team Leader.
I'll be emailing you in a few minutes... I can't guarantee that I'm coming up, but if I do, I will probably be more directly involved in FOTR haybal transport/distribution or mapping. If I can make it up, I will pitch in regardless, but I just can't commit to a leadership role. :(
Randii
randii 10-14-2002, 02:17 PM Since I was up on the trail for the FOTR work party on Sunday, I checked in on the Ellis Creek shitters.
There's a snazzy wood-stained shitter there with a half-moon cutout. Nice work, actually, but some scuzzballs have spilled lye all over the seat area.... that could make for an ugly suprise to the ol' sphincter. This outhouse also has a roof, and that won't last through a winter with a few (oh, maybe 10-16) feet of snow on it. My suggestions for repair on this one:
* remove the roof
* rinse off (!!flood!!) the seat area to disperse and neutralize the lye (bring a bucket, and plan on 5-10 trips to the creek)
* probably put a new skin of plywood on the top of the seatbox (just don't recommend taking chances with lye)
Suggested materials: bucket, drywall screws, saw, 2'x3' chunk of plywood.
There's also one of the shitters Erik and I built, and its outer skin is in pretty good shape, with the exception of the door. The seatbox itself is shot entirely, and parts of it have been removed (that musta been a STINKY fire). My suggestions for repair on this one:
* rebuild the seatbox, needs new supports (simple framing)
* the door is badly bowed and has been torn off and placed on top of the outhouse enclosure (door looks unrepairable, needs disposed of so nobody leaves it as a 'roof' -- that's a sure-fire way to crush the enclosure from snow-loads)
Suggested materials: nails, drywall screws, saw, to 8' 2x4s, and most of one 4'x8' chunk of plywood.
Random thoughts:
* Unpainted plywood turns into a taco in two years -- I'll be painting the one that is in my driveway, since the painted Executive Shittah/Chrome Throne is still hanging together with the same plywood.
* Snow-loads are strongest vertically (by weight) but can also be a real problem sideways, against the door. I've used a latch on the inside for privacy and the outside to keep the door form slamming itself into oblivion in the wind... I'll be deleting the outside latch and replacing it with a spring. The throne at Ellis looks like the door bent inward from the snow melting inside first, and then pushing in from the outside.
Randii
randii 10-15-2002, 12:21 PM So by my count, I'm buying Erik a sixpack of beer, and splitting a six of Fresca :p with Nasvik and Kodak... DanH is one beer into his sixpack (who'da thunk such a cleancut fella would be sipping Lone Star in my driveway at 10:00 in the morning?).
Here's a parting shot, and the reason why I'm cutting a crescent moon into the door.. :flipoff2: for Paul :flipoff2: ....
From The Vanishing American Outhouse, by Ronald S. Barlow (1989)
Luna, the ancient crescent shaped figure, was a universal symbol for womankind. A moon, sawed into a privy door, served as the 'Ladies Room' sign of early innkeeping days. Sol, a sunburst pattern, was cut into the men's room side of the outhouse. These symbols were necessary because in Colonial times only a fraction of our population could read or write.
As time passed by and frontiers were pushed further westward, the gentlemen's restrooms fell into disrepair and eventually were abandoned altogether. Accommodations for ladies were better maintained and this is why the moon symbol remains on many outhouse doors today. Its original meaning, however, was lost to the general population sometime in the mid 1800's.
Randii (who knows WAY to much about privvies, it seems)
HighToy 10-15-2002, 03:03 PM If you add a steep dormer style roof to the shittah it should stand up to the snow impact and will keep the inside of the thing from rotting out so fast.
From just what I have read here am I correct to assume that these only last through a couple seasons? If so it's definately time for a bigga and betta shittah.

Well if you returned my call.........:flipoff2: Look for my cell on your PMs.
I would like to know who I should count on for Ellis, and where they'll be coming from. Can anyone on my team bring some of the suggested supplies that Randii recommends? I have a bunch of stuff, but not all. Anyone got a cordless circular saw.....? :D

kodak 10-15-2002, 05:30 PM Paul,
I am headin' up Friday afternoon. I will have beer. We don't have to depend on Randii for Fresca. Do they even sell that any more?
You can have some too Randii. Just Fawkin with you :flippoff2:
Should be at the spillway around 7 pm at the latest.
randii 10-15-2002, 05:32 PM If you add a steep dormer style roof to the shittah it should stand up to the snow impact and will keep the inside of the thing from rotting out so fast.
...and keep the inside by getting cleaned out by the rain and just generally make a serious stinkhole of the place. Seriously, setting up a roof would require WAY more structure to the walls than they currently have, and structure makes them more expensive and harder to move. Keep in mind that these CANNOT be permanent, due to Forest Service rules, and we're sneaking them in pretty much under the radar, without fanfare.
One of the current shitters has been up there for three years and is still in good shape. One of the two-year old shitters is suffering seatbox failure (pretty easy to repair), but the enclosure is in good shape -- the other two-year-old throne is in fine shape, and still accepting donations. :p Erik has built yet another shitter for this year, and Dan and I have hammered together a second, and Paul and Tim are just itching to dig some new one-year holes for the old and new facilities -- and I reckon I'll be squatting on them for a few more years until we get a better sanitation solution worked out with the Forest Service. There's *FIVE* of 'em out there now... that ain't half bad.
Retiring all of these shitters in exchange for a more permanent, high-volume solution would be the true measure of success... but that's a few years off. :(

I should have asked for scotch since it was before noon :flipoff2:
I think the taste improved after I added the sawdust.

Very cool, Dan. I'll be dropping off lumber at Ellis on my way to Spider. Should be leaving the spillway about 2:30 on Friday. Does that mean you're on my crew? :D
