: My New Bumper! Bootie Fab?
redrangie 09-28-2002, 06:24 PM Well,
30 bucks worth of remnant steel and 8hours. Core is a 1.5x3 12 gauge, and the brackets are 1/4". Used the factory horizontal holes in the ears, and fashioned a bracket to go to the bottom of the oem bracket. (new hole).
I wanted it wide enough to take a big hit without tearing up the body, and also wide enough for a spare tire mount. However, I think I got it too wide. Opinions?
I think I will take it somewhere to get chopped, as my chop saw wont handle the size, then seam it back together. I haven't decided on removing the hitch, as the departure angle isn't much better.
PS,
I picked up the mig 3 weeks or so ago, and haven't welded since brazing was cool, so don't make fun of the welds.

Serious One 09-28-2002, 07:15 PM Dude,
That's sweet!
Looks beefy enough. On the width, I'd go with your gut feeling. If you think it's a hair too wide, get it cut. YOUR'E the one who has to look at it every day. :flipoff2:
JSBriggs fabbed up something similar a while back. He should post a pic or two. I have a beefy upgraded rear bumper, but it looks like a stock bumper from the '70's so it's not much to look at.
road1will 09-28-2002, 07:17 PM looks good, personally i would have tried to add in more quarter protection though. also as far as how wide it is, i think that if you chopped the corners off the bumper, it would look great. i dunno if that is what you are talking about doing though?
nice work

Yes and no.
As it is, there is 10" of "corner" protection with about 4 on the actual side. I was thinking of the overall width, maybe shortening it by an 1". I kinda like the width though, as it gives me a high lift point on the corner. I always hate having to use the bumper. I will probably run it, and if I kiss it, I will shorten it.
Who knows where to get some 1.5" shackle eyelets? 5/8ths eye should be good enough.
JSBriggs 09-30-2002, 03:02 PM I passed some pics along.
As far as recovery points go 3/4 it is more "standard". And are you looking for somthing like this?

RockRover 09-30-2002, 07:41 PM Personally I would MAKE a pair of these (I plan to)...Or buy them already done...I think they are about 60% cleaner than the bolt on's...

Nice Bumper John. That is very similiar to what I was thinking about building for my bumperless truck. Very slim. I am so spoiled with my departure angle. At least spoiled as a Range Rover owner could be....
How much does it weigh? I like the idea of welding on tabs for D-rings.
Looks Great! Maybe I'll have to see it in person soon.

It weighs about 45lbs, if that. However, I feel that with it being a box tube, it will be strong enough.

And we have a WINNER! I must have gone through 200 pages of supply catalogs yesterday. AA MFG has a bracket that is close, but nothing that studly. AND they're in my home town.... Thanks Doug!
