: Tire Recommendations
Charles 09-29-2002, 02:35 PM I'm thinking of going up to a 35 or 36 inch tire. I need some experienced opinions on the best tires out there. Around here we mostly have mud, with some hills, and a few rocks. I will be driving to the trail, so the ride of the tire will be considered also. I am leaning towards 36x12.50 SXs. But I've also thought about 35x12.50 SSRs, 35x13.50 Claws, and 35x12.50 BFG MTs. Thanks for any input.
Motornoggin 09-29-2002, 03:30 PM I haven' t used em, but my choice would be the radial Claws.
NE-RokToy 09-29-2002, 03:32 PM Swamper TSL, great in the mud liveable on the road.
Bigburlynakedguy 09-29-2002, 03:33 PM Thornbirds. get ready. here it comes.

Out of the 4 tires you listed I personally would go with the SX. I have had the BFG MT and the SX in those exact sizes. The SSR is garbage if you ask me. The claws are just to small compared to their advertised size and they wear like boggers.
usmcdoc14 09-29-2002, 03:53 PM i have claws on my DD and they work good for street and general offroad (ie:a little of everything) but when i off road i go boggers
drop the money in some swampers(radials if you do more street than trail) and deal with the pavement quirks
Charles 09-29-2002, 04:34 PM Thanks for the replies. Keep 'em coming.
twistedmetal 09-29-2002, 05:16 PM Any Swamper. But skip the fawking bogger.
cj8scrambld 09-29-2002, 05:21 PM SX's and just get used to the road quirks...they are after all Swampers!
Keep an eye out and an ear out for used tires, check out your local 4wd shops or big truck centers for used tires in your size range, these will be your daily driving set...
Then spend your actual money on a set of TSL bias, they'll work better for general purpose and mud than the SX, but if you need the sidewall bite get the SX...
Just my .02...no sense in burning up a good set of meats driving around all day.
SittonHigh 09-29-2002, 05:26 PM I would definately go with the swamper myself. The claws suck on and off road in my experiance. The bfg's would be ok If you drive on the road a lot. I would use any swamper except thornbirds. Just pick the one with the road wear you like.
85toyboy 09-29-2002, 05:36 PM for deep mud slinging and noisey ride- TSL bias
For all around tough trail tire and noisy ride- TSL sx
For good traction on trails and good ride- go BFG
VT_Toy 09-29-2002, 05:39 PM Go with Swamper TSLs, the lugs are bigger than the SX.
What kind of vehicle?
BillaVista 09-29-2002, 05:46 PM 36x12.50 Swamper TSL
not as heavy or expensive as the sx, better in mud, and the 36" is one of a few with 10 ply sidewall
road1will 09-29-2002, 05:57 PM for mud definetly the Q78 TSL. 35.5" (measured) and 10.5" wide. they DIG! i love these tires, the skinny profile is what you want for mud, they cut right through it instead of pushing it around in front of the tire like a fattie.
i run them in new england and absolutely love them. you wont be dissapointed.

Super Swamper TSL 36x12.50-15
Ply Rating=8
Tread Width=10.5 O.D.=36
8 ply is still great though
Charles 09-29-2002, 06:42 PM The tires are going on my FJ40. I have about 6 inches of lift. I have more than enough clearance for the 33s I'm running now, I just need to go up in size.
Magoo 09-29-2002, 06:50 PM I thought Claws were cool, until I saw them! Then I saw them out 'wheelin, even worse...
TSL's get my vote, pick a size and live with the quirks.
Suprsizit 09-29-2002, 10:00 PM Don't know if they are available in your area or thesze you want but I love my BuckShots.
FJ4ZROX 09-30-2002, 04:30 PM 37" MT/R's -- they are only about 36.5" mounted on my 15*8.5 rims. Liveable on the road and great in the rocks.
