Looking at buying a 99 TJ with about 160k miles 3"lift and 33s. It's a 4.0L with the TF999 auto tranny. Seller says it runs and shifts smooth but I don't have any experience with this tranny.

Looking to get it for mostly commuting and weekend trips.

it all dpends on how it's be maintained. just rbuilt mine it has 90k on it pulling a set of 35's but im not nice either.the life of an auto trans is to keep the tires movin and the fluid cool. no auto trans will last if it is working to hard to pull a set of tires its not properly geard for.

I assume then a rebuild is in my near future. What should I be looking to pay? I don't have the space or know how to do it myself.

Do u REALLY want another auto? I swore up and down that after my last auto started giving me trouble other then in a passenger car I was never ever gonna get another auto again, and even then the passenger car option is a little grey.

This would be my first auto in a jeep. I'm pretty sure it's what I want.

> $1500

much cheaper to replace than to have someone rebuild it.

You can save $500+ by pulling it yourself...

I had mine rebuilt with a new servo band clutches non lock up convrter and a mild shift kit all parts from trans go for around 500 bucks, but i did remove and reinstall everthing. but as BLACK SHEEP posted do you realy want another auto??? if i have any more trouble with my auto i will sell the core and swap in an ax15.

I would say ball park 400 to 1000 bucks depending on the extent of the rebuild, i stoped driving mine as soon as it started slipping which saved me lots of coin in the long run

You should be fine. I have a tf999 in my 91 YJ 190K with 33's and 3.55 gears for 60K and 36's with 4.56 gears for the last 15K with no problems . I have never changed the filter. I do pull the lines to flush the fluid every 2 years and I added a cooler. If your tf999 goes get a 4 speed auto from an xj "lower 1st gear & overdrive" my .02 I would not go manual unless you have really low diff gears.
