: Good Deal on eBay
CruisD64 09-29-2002, 07:15 PM There is a really good deal going on eBay. There is 20 hours left on it. Its a stock 75 cruiser with a restoration. Looks damn good. The price is only at 5k right now.

60seriesguy 09-29-2002, 08:40 PM I think that Cruiser is RAPIDLY approaching top dollar for it...remember, the definition of restoration is as iffy as that of "cheap"...
Just my $0.02, I guess I'm cheap, and I don't like restorations...:flipoff2:
rick d 09-29-2002, 09:02 PM we are told 20K on engine, what of miles on:
tranny, transfer, diffs, drivelines, steering etc?
being a 1975, all that and no disk brakes
what is up with the turn signals? too cheap in their resto to buy even taiwanese aftermarket??
..nice white paint job from 550 digital miles away
I'm with henry, outer range for the truck
CruisD64 09-29-2002, 11:04 PM Ok guys, but if you let stupid shit like turn signals alter your idea of a good deal, then maybe you should buy hondas or corollas or perhaps wranglers??? No offense but there is no Land Cruiser that I've ever owned that has been PERFECT! from the start. That's part of the fun, to have to work for. No disc brakes? ok, go to the for sale section and you'll find a later model axle....OR! spend 300 dollars and put em on yourself. I'm sorry, but 5.6g's for a rust free cruiser is cheap and as far as I see it, 75 is one of the best years. So the brakes are drums, big deal, they stop the car. My brother drove on his with 4 corner drums for years, and he never had a problem stopping. I know cruisers and I know good deals. Having owned 5, makes me a pretty good judge. I don't need another one, I'm just saying that for someone who is looking for a deal, this is one. May not be the best deal, but as far as I see it, I'd rather pay 5 and half for a cruiser that has some things wrong with it than 12-15 for a perfect one, cause I'll get it damn near perfect with minimal effort. No offense by any of this, I'm just a little thrown off by how picky some people are.
rustycruiser 09-29-2002, 11:46 PM I will have to agree with my amigos here. My reason. I am very scared of anything "restored". Don't get me wrong, if it was a Jonathon Ward restored TLC truck I would jump all over it for that price. But in my experiance over the years, my version of "restoration" doesn't mesh with the other shmoes out there. That truck's pretty (crappy) new paint job is probably covering enough bondo to fix the hole in the Titanic, not to mention the rust that was probably also painted over. At least with a stock "unrestored" truck all the problems are visable, you don't have to go looking for them (or discover when your gas tank falls out). Maybe my standards are too high, but I can afford to be selective. I have all the Cruisers I need (actually can afford) right now. As far as 75 being a great year?? Not in my opinion. If I was buying a stock mall cruiser like that, it better be a 79-83, and pref a post 81 with the split case. Just my biased rant for tonight.

60seriesguy 09-30-2002, 12:37 AM No offense taken. I'm just surprised that you would take one look at that Cruiser and agree with the owner's version of "rust free". How can you tell? I've seen some CRUD comming out of Salt Lake, take a look at some of the parts trucks at Outback...
Yes, fixing them is a part of owning Land Cruisers. But for almost $6,000, I would expect a solid Cruiser. Is this one? Who knows, maybe you can tell from the crappy pictures and the owner's description, but I can't.
In the last fifteen years, I've seen COUNTLESS FJ40's described as "restored" or "rust-free" to last me a lifetime, and a solid 80% of them were neither. Take it with a grain of salt...
If this turns out to be a great Cruiser, fantastic for the new owner; in my personal experience, it's too much to pay for something like this.

Amen...
Henry,
How would you describe "Goose"... I told a friend it was a "fairly clean '79" cruiser.... he did a second take and make the comment "NO RUST!!! OMG!" Ya, some folks describe everything a little differently.
Sorry I missed ya Thursday night... I loaded the stock '79 rims in Hunter's rig, so swing by and get them before he SELLS them. :)
Oh, I think I am hooked on something that makes restored cruisers look cheap... went up in a neighbors Piper Dakota this weekend at the neighborhood fly-in. It was a blast... Kate (age 7) kept asking for ANOTHER RIDE. Tempted to toss her into the back of a Pitts Special... She'd love it!

CruisD64 09-30-2002, 11:03 AM Well, the beautiful thing about eBay is that if you win the bid, and get over to Salt Lake and you see that it does have rust, you say,"sorry dude, you said this thing has no rust......whats this right here?...looks like rust...." and you can back out. Yeah, it might be a pain in the ass, but oh well. I totally understand what you guys are saying, but maybe it is a clean restoration. I'm restoring a cruiser ATM and I'll tell you that it was a rust bucket when i got it but will be a clean, METAL restoration when its done. :) Anyways, enough of this. It's a pointless argument because we all have our own ideas about restorations.
rick d 09-30-2002, 12:27 PM my point on the turn signals is:
1) the original holes in the fender have been filled either by steel (+mud) or by MUD (aka bondo).
2)An additional hole has been cut in each apron for Wal-Mart trailer lights (acting as turn signals).
the pretty paint would have to be altered to put on OE lights or mods still done to use 70 series lights which would need new paint on aprons (relocating hook). So only way is to live with this.
In a 'restoration' one would return to original. Oh, pardon me it's the FJ25 look...
this piece o shit has a paint job, with the interior reinstalled as is (if ever pulled out) and the front seats with pep boys covers on them look fantastic.
...and still no comment on the 100,000, 200,000 or is it 300,000 miles on the t-case etc? And Why? was the engine overhauled? there is a hugh amount of history buried in this truck and body condition concealed in poor photos and a Maaco/Earl Schieb paint job, or was that 'Jules' the Deusenburg restorer who spent 2,000 hours preping the body?
wow, what a deal.
dieselcruiserhead 09-30-2002, 01:04 PM Speaking of Outback this truck was there for a little while. I see it now and again here in town. What I remember:
1) I believe the owner had a combination of people do the "resto" work, some of which by Outback, mostly to remove the rust.
2) From what I was told, he spent tons of money "restoring" it but got a $400 Maaco job.
3) There is some rust starting to come through the paint, the rims a fairly rusty.
4) For a long time now the owner and his son were trying to get $8-9,000 for it and I remember him being pissed that we couldn't sell it for $8 or $9 G when I worked there. I don't think they are trying to rip anyone off, I think they just paid a lot of money trying to fix it up. For a while when Outback first started I was told it was the best truck they had out there which is why these pictures are in the show room: (pictures from the depths of the Outback web site). 1 (http://www.outbacklandcruisers.com/picts/whiteshowroom2.jpg) 2 (http://www.outbacklandcruisers.com/picts/whiteshowroom3.jpg) 3 (http://www.outbacklandcruisers.com/picts/whiteshowroom4.jpg)
I personally think if it went for $6 or even $7 it wouldn't be that bad a deal. I'm familar with it and drove it and am somewhat familiar with the local market. I have reason to believe the truck is up here in Park City, not down in Salt Lake. If it's in town and anyone wants me to check it out, I can and can probably take more digital pictures too.

5) If I remember correctly I don't think there's bondo on it, I think it was mostly steel replaced with steel or other used parts. I *can't* totally confirm this.
