Hey guys,

Im more of a Jeep guy but i have a chance to get a free project ScoutII. I think its a 74 but I havent gotten to look at it yet. Is there some good info sites about what options and stuff were available on these trucks?? I can't really find much jsut surfin the web. Its has Dana 44's front and rear and a Auto tranny. And it does not have a Dana 300 xfer case. Tell me any thoughts or suggestions and tell me if its even worth my while to play with. ALL info is good info!

It has a frame and you XJ guys don't understand that! :flipoff2:

www.binderbulletin.org. start with the FAQ's then ask your Newbie questions in Tech talk. It's the JU of the IH world.

I f it is a 74 it is a later one. Some of the 74s came with a Dana 30 in front. IH didn't use the Dana 300 T case tou're looking for untill 1980. Do a search for The Binder Bulletin for info about stock information. If it is not completely rustef apart it definately is worth while playing with. Did any of your J#$ps come with 44s stock?

No, I didn't think so.:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

The drivetrain in this vehicle is tougher stock than any J$%p. Why do you think you guys are always looking for axles and T cases out of Scouts? I take back what I said about being worthwhile to play with. If you are looking for a Mall Poser, then NO! it isn't! But if you want to build a very capable off road rig, then YES!!!! I would go SOA, lower gears, and wheel the piss out of it. HTH WS

Uhm, yes 44's did come as a rear axle factory and as an option in some Heeps. Before you try to lay down some smack get your facts straight. Spend some time at that back of the class DAN

Welcome Newbie :flipoff2: Now STFU!!

hey whitescout,

Do some research and know your shit so you dont make a idiot outta yourself! 88-90 XJ's had a 44 option, and you can still get a 44 in the TJ and you can get a alum. 44 in the grand. Thanks for the help from the rest of ya!

What kinda t-case and tranny are probably in it? And what are some main things i should plan on upgrading?

It should have front disks, most likely 3.54 or 3.73 ratio. If it's a manual then it should be a T18 with 4:1 first, auto would be 727. If it's an inline 6 then it's an AMC 258, if it's an 8 then it'll be a IH 304 or 345. The front will be a 30 or 44 depending on when it was produced, t-case is a Dana 20.

Cheap mods, spring it over, weld the rear, lunch box up front and Tera gears in the T-case and your ready to go.

Whitescout, you have no idea WTF you are talking about.

Jeep started using rear 44s in about 1946 and you can buy a new Jeep today with one. Over the years, Jeep has used a ton of 44s front and rear. Hint...look under a 1980s Wagoneer for a start.

....and a 44 supporting the weight of a scout is just as weak as a 35 under a jeep, maybe worse.

I was too quick to post. Iwas thinking only of the wranglers etc.... I was also talking in reference to the front axle. I know that the cherokees, wagoneers, etc have 44s front and rear. He stated that he knows that it has 44s front and rear, he also stated that it doesn't have a 300, and that it is an auto. So, if he does have 44s front and rear, he has disc brakes, a 727 , a d20, and most likely 3.73 gears.

In the second half of '86, the CJ-7 came with 44s front and rear. It was when AMC was phasing out all their CJ hardware and tooling up for the first run of the YJs.

Some late 80's XJ's had a rear 44 with the towing option, but they are far and few between.

The CJ-5 could be ordered with 44's throughout many years of its production.

All the full size Jeeps I've ever seen used 44's or larger.
