: Crimped primers?
maxyedor 12-08-2009, 02:30 AM It's Tuesday, so I have a stupid newbie reloading question.
Starting to my reloading stuff together, and I've been looking for brass. Best price out there on 9mm seems to be this stuff from Wideners http://wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=1382&dir=278|282|908|917
Only thing that kinda worries me is crimped primers (no idea what that even means), do I need to do anything special to reload this stuff?
As long as I'm asking noob questions, what about shooting bare lead down an XD9? I can't seem to find anything telling me not to like I see warning people not to shoot it from a Glock barrel, so can I assume it will be fine. Just trying to plink as cheaply as possible, and found 124gr lead for less than $50/1000, trying to get under $140/1000 total on the first use of my brass.
Chris 12-08-2009, 05:41 AM That 9mm brass is very expensive plus you'd have to deal with the primers. You should be able to pick up 9mm for $20-$25 per thousand with no crimp. Go here, riverofguns.com , type in 9mm brass and see what you find. I just bought 6k yesterday for $125 shipped to me. And shoot away on the lead.
PONY_DRIVER 12-08-2009, 06:16 AM FYI the bare lead is only a bad deal in guns with polygonal rifling, like a glock. AFAIK anyone have an alibi fire?
TNToy 12-08-2009, 06:53 AM Lead is fine through an XD. Polyigonal rifling (Glock and HK are the big users of this) tends to foul more quickly with lead, and lead to guns blowing up if you let it accumulate.
Try and keep the velocity down, too. Loading anwhere between the minimum and the midpoint between that and the maximum in your manual should result in about zero lead accumulation. Don't shoot lead bullets indoors, keep the barrel clean, and you're good to go. :)

I've had no issues after about 1k of lead down my xd45, the only problem is that I tried out SWC since I was able to get them so cheap. :homer:
I get about 1 -2 jams per clip, but livable for the cost.

atblis 12-08-2009, 08:12 AM Go to one of the big gun boards and start looking at the classifieds. Don't be afraid to make offers. I just swung a deal for 6k pieces of commercial mixed brass for $100 shipped.

1-2 jams per MAGAZINE and you're ok with that?

A 45 SWC bullet is not the most feed friendly profile, however there are some good tips on how to make them feed here: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=455184

He was using clips, maybe that's why it jammed so much. :)

Use the Hensley and Gibbs #68 200 gr LSWC mold, and you're in business. It was specifically designed to feed through a 1911.
maxyedor 12-08-2009, 10:57 AM Sweet, so looks like combing other gun boards for brass is the way to go there.
Glad to hear I can shoot cast lead without issues.
afroman006 12-08-2009, 02:34 PM Crimped primers arent a big deal if you have the equipment to deal with em. I bought ~4k of 9mm .mil brass from some imaginary member here awhile back. Since I finally found and bought a used Dillon super swage, I've been swagin the shit outta some brass. I've loaded and shot some of it and it works 100% as well as anything else I have.

If I ever cast for a bottom feeder I will go with a truncated cone. Hell I am thinking of getting a Lee 6 banger 9mm TC mold and polishing .001-.002 out of it with valve lapping compound so I can run them as cast in 38/357. Lee molds are known for being at advertised size or slightly under.
