: Trophy Boar Hunt, what guns to take?

I just accepted an invitation from a subcontractor to go on a trophy boar hunt in south Texas sometime in March. I'm more excited than a kid at Christmas because I've been wanting to hunt pigs for awhile. I haven't received the details yet but they guarantee a trophy boar of at least 300lbs, a meat hog under 150lbs and up to 6 predators during night hunts consisting of bobcat, fox, coyote and mountain lion.

I just finally took my OK hunter safety course so I've never been hunting before. I can't decide what guns to take. I'm thinking I may be able to go with what I have but I might need to make some changes to my stash. I know a lot of people hunt pigs with an AR but I've also heard that something with more punch is needed on bigger hogs.

Here's what I have:
Marlin 30-30 w/ Iron Sights
AR-15 w/ Red Dot
AK47
SKS
20ga Shotgun

Any reason why I'd need a scoped rifle? Borrow a 30-06 or put a scope on my 30-30?

Any of those will work if you shoot them in the right place. I prefer the neck or between the shoulder blades.

I'd probably take the AR mainly because the scope.

Are you flying or driving. If driving I would take 2 guns that way if you have an issue with one, you will be able to swap to another.

When going more than an hour from the house, or for more than one day - I generally take my 45 colt lever gun as a back up. My dad fell once and broke his scope (literally broke the adjustable eye piece off the scope by falling on rocks).
He was close to the house, so he only lost the rest of that day hunting. It is very unlikely anything will happen, but like a spare tire - I would feel stupid going all the way to Texas and having something happen.

I use a double rifle hard case, so it doesn't take anymore room. It just adds a little more weight to the case. It is nice to know that if you have a problem, you can pitch the problem gun to the side, grab another and keep hunting.

What are you most comfortable shooting? Take that one.

Do you have a sidearm? If so, not a bad idea to cart it along with you. If your rifle jams or malfunctions it would be nice to have a backup. Hogs can get mean...

Luckily I'm pretty comfortable with anything, and I'll be doing a lot of practice before I go.

I'll be packing my carry gun, a Glock 30 .45acp in case anything gets scary.

AR.... that way if the first shot doesnt get it... the other 29 will.

How long will you be needing the gun? I have a semi-auto 06 that you can borrow, I have killed a pile of deer with it but I recently took the scope off of it. I can throw it back on the gun and get it pretty close with Remington Core-Lokt's (only ammo I have ever used in it.) I am in Stillwater, PM me if you need it.
