: Dana 60 two questions
wally4 12-10-2009, 02:44 PM I bought a Dana 60 from an 81 K30. It is complete out to the spindles.
I also have some 17x9 wheels which are 6 on 5-1/2, and a 14-bolt FF.
What kind of hubs should I get?
Are there 8-lug hubs that don't stick out as far as stock Chevy hubs?
Odin K30 12-10-2009, 02:48 PM The wheels youre gonna use are 6 on 5.5?
And you plan on 8 lug hubs?
mudskipper4x4 12-10-2009, 03:25 PM Unless the wheels are some kinda special wheels, sell them and just run regular srw D60 8 lug hubs.
Snowbird13 12-10-2009, 03:28 PM By hubs, do you mean the lockouts?
GMCTruxrule 12-10-2009, 03:47 PM The cost and time in converting 8 lug axles to 6 lug is not worth it.
Sell the 6 lug rims and buy some 8 lug rims.
As far as "hubs sticking out" no, full floater axles and most older manual hub front axles have hubs that "stick out".
Odin K30 12-10-2009, 03:49 PM By hubs, do you mean the lockouts?
No.
Lockouts are the lockouts.
Hubs are where the rotor and wheel mount.
wally4 12-10-2009, 03:50 PM By hubs, do you mean the lockouts?
I mean the wheel hubs. I know that Dynatrac makes shorter hubs.
I won't spend that kind of money, but I thought since I have to buy hubs, there might be some simple way of buying different hubs that stick out a little less than the stock Chevys. Maybe only Chevy hubs will fit my spindles?
t_and_a6 12-11-2009, 08:14 AM chevy and dodge are the same hubs i beleive! ford is its own breed

No
Dodge hubs are different and stick out farther than Chevy/GM
nvrenuf 12-11-2009, 08:43 AM Ford bearing hubs are shorter by about 5/8". You would need to swap everything from the knuckles out to do this.

And aren't the ford hub/spindles generally considered weaker than the GM stuff???
Flanges will gain ya a little over a lockout.
Grumpy_old_fart 12-11-2009, 12:59 PM ford spindle length is shorter. its not weaker, but the diminished distance between bearings means the bearings will take less load. Ford uses a thinner rotor, as does Dodge. Ford knuckles are weaker than GM or Dodge.
many differences....
MNorby 12-11-2009, 01:59 PM Doesn't the ford spindle only use 5 studs to knuckle whereas the gm uses 6? And the gm uses bigger studs?

This is true with the 44 , dunno about the 60
I guess I really dont understand why anybody would want to change the hubs on a chevy 60....... Is it DRW or somthing?
It would be loads cheaper to get more wheels imo

Yes, that is correct.

In addition to dealing with the 8 vs 6 lug problem, he also wants a shorter bearing hub snout - Ford is weaker but shorter.
Grumpy_old_fart 12-11-2009, 02:47 PM the reason he wants a shorter hub would be to keep it out of the rocks, i presume
wally4 12-11-2009, 03:24 PM Thanks very much, Grumpy Old Fart.
I want to build my axle as well as I can afford to, and hopefully only buy some of the major parts one time around.
MNorby 12-11-2009, 06:16 PM Are you set on running lockouts? Run flanges and forget about it, who cares if they get scratched up.
Scooterloo 12-11-2009, 07:30 PM PM Wilson, he has some hubs that may work.
vic_v8 12-12-2009, 05:55 PM fords have dual piston brakes
