ok here's the deal: I'm about to get a daily driver from my parents... To keep at school and the like while my cj rests during the semester.

Its an '86 cherokee- 2wd. with the 2.8 and TF 904 or 909 trans, not sure which but i think its a 909 cuz i can feel the converter lockup.

These trannys are 23 spline output.

Is there an adapter i can buy to put a tcase on this trans (its brand new, and so is the motor- yah, dont rag, i advised the 'rents against it).

I have my cj d30 widetrac front hanging around, or could get a driver's side cherokee front.

Point is, I WANT THIS THING 4WD.
Please let me know your ideas about this.

and oh- I'm only going to use a d30 in the front, and prob put a d44 in the rear.

Let me know what u guys think?
I'd really appreciate it!

No adaptors if you want a stock type setup. The 2wd 904 has a longer output shaft and tailhousing. You would need to disasseble the trans to swap it out, or just swap in a different tranny. No matter what you do, the tranny will have to be swapped or disassembled. The 2.8 is a POS, personally I'd take your money and buy a $1000 4wd cherokee and start with that.

oldjeep is correct, swap out the trans for one with the correct output shaft. I have a 4wd trans if you need it.

Look around, i'll bet you can find a donor XJ with bad engine that'll donate all the parts you'll need for just a couple hundred.

I converted my 94 from 2wd...wasnt a bad job.

use a waggy 44 up front if your gonna convert one, dont use a 30

thanks guys

so it sounds like a donor vehicle is best eh? well, at least for now, i will keep the motor and trans- just swap in a different output shaft and tailhousing to mount to a donor 231? or whatever case these had.

for the front end, if i were to use a waggy 44, (obviously a narrow trac one), how hard would this be?--as in width, steering, etc? I really dont feel like messing around w/ remounting coil perches and the like.

if you've done this let me know:beer:
I'd appreciate any comments.

You want to swap the whole tranny unless you are qualified to rebuild an automatic tranny. I've done one of these (actually 4wd trans to 2wd;) and it is not a beginner job.
