: Worth it?

I found an 83 Jeep CJ7 for $2200 OBO
It has the 4.2L
Fiberglass body painted a nice dark grey
Fiberglass hood, windshield frame, and fenders. (all are clean except the fenders which would need to be replaced)
Full cage
Seats from a 95 wrangler
Tilt column with Grant GT wheel
1.5-2" body lift (yuck)
~4" lift springs
Dana 30
AMC 20
5 speed manual (he didnt know what kind)
Also didnt know what kind of transfer case it had, I figured a Dana 300...
~31" AT on some aluminium rims
The guy doesnt know how many miles are on it and doesnt know that last time it was rebuilt. It started fine and ran fine but there was a loud screaching noise while it ran but it could have been a belt pully or something.

So you think it is worth it even if I just part it out to use on my wrangler?
Can anyone answer what T-case and 5 speed it might have.

Off the top of my head, which is probley wrong:D I think the 5 speed would be a AX-15, and the t-case would be a NP231?

You're right, you are wrong :flipoff2: The tranny is a t-5, which is really weak, and the tcase is a Dana 300

You won't probably be wrong, you are wrong :flipoff2: Wranglers had that combination of tcase and tranny, but in the CJ, it will be a D300 t case, and probably a T-5 tranny. Not positive on the tranny, but I think thats what it was.

So here comes the next part of the question. Can I use the outers and brakes from my Dana 30 from a 95 and put those on the dana 30 from the 83 and use the dana 300 T-case behind my NV4500?
(does that make sense? So I can still have 297xjoints and the diff on the proper side for the D-300)

No, the CJ kuckles are different.

So I would be better off just using Warn shafts and CTM u-joints in the older Dana 30.

The R&P should be the same though, Right? (as in I should be able to use my 4.56 from my wrangler in the older axle)

Yes, that is of course they are the same rotation. Standard or reverse.

I think you should pay about 1k for it.

Nope, the 95 has a reverse rotation 30 while the Cj has a standard

keep in mind to that the CJ front end is totally different than that in your YJ. Diff is on different side, different width, different gears. Basically the only thing that is interchangeable between them is the carrier, spder gears, and pinion yoke.

If you can find a running CJ& for 1K I'll take a dozen.:flipoff2: IMO around here $2200 would be a steal.

It's a decent deal for a Jeep to build on, not much you could use for your Wrangler, CJ axles on a Wrangler would be really dumb, way too narrow to even fit right, let alone steer. The trans is most likely a T-5, not a real durable unit, the Dana 300 t-case is nice, but not worth $2200 to get it, the rest belongs in a CJ, let someone else buy it and build it.

$2200 is a bargain around here especially with the glass tub. I wouldn't part it out though, run the t5 till it explodes and then put in a t18. Sounds like it already has room for bigger tires.

I know the pig is on the wrong side for my wrangler and that was the point since I wanted to use the D300.

The main reason for picking it up is the body since my YJ is rusting pretty bad. I figure a full glass body and a full roll cage and new seats for 2000. Not a bad deal, I was just asking the rest about the axle and such because it would come with the Jeep and a Dana 300 is way better/shorter/stronger then my NP231. :flipoff2:

Now for all of you who think I should just build the CJ...
Isnt a YJ frame stronger? So wouldnt that be a better platform anyway?

Yes, YJ frame is better, and wider, use the body if you want, with teh CJ grille and hood, and YJ fenders for better clearance. Use the Dana 300 if you like, but the axles would be silly, they are too narrow to work well with the wide YJ frame. Buy it, sell the rolling chassis, motor and trans, use the Dana 300 on your YJ trans if you have an AX-15, find a passenger drop Waggy 44 front, convert it to 5 on 5.5 with Ford hubs, run a Scout II Dana 44 or Early Bronco 9" rear.

Or, if the CJ frame is good, just build the friggin CJ

I already have MPI kit, NV4500, Ford 8.8 and a ton of other stuff done to the YJ so I have a feeling unless I get it back from the shop and they tell me I have a bent frame or something then I will be using the YJ. I was only going to use the front CJ axle but it seems that it isnt a good idea so I will look to the other options.
