Well, i'm dissassembling my transfercase as the oil looked as silverpaint, it was whining and leaking, and a rebuilt was suggested by one of you guys, so far so good, i got it from under the truck, seperated from the transmission, opened it,...
and came to point nr. 15 of my Haynes Manual on P.131 which says "Whilst preventing the low speed gear from moving forward by wedging it against the case with..., remove the shaft together with the high speed gear and the high and low clutch sleeve"

How do you do this ? Is the rear bearing (nr.34,p130, lower panel) on the output shaft supposed to just slide of ? It doesn't move to much in my case.
I'm working on a 1980 BJ40, but untill know and as far as I can see everything is identical to the transfer of an FJ40.

Thanks to get me through this,

Walter

One piece case, right? You need a real manual, like the Toyota Body and Chassis manual that covers this in detail with pictures. Basically, you lay the case down on the bench or support it with blocks on the front output side down so that the front output hole is unobstructed so that the shaft and gear can drop out. Then you support the large low range gear against the front (down) side of the case with some pieces of wood. Hold a piece of soft aluminum or brass bar on the end of the rear output shaft (the drum and nut and bearing retainer are off, right?) and whack it smartly with the BFH. Repeat until shaft and high speed gear come out the front. Make sure that they don't drop on your foot.

Thanks Pin Head,

Yep, case is one piece. This makes much more sense then the description in the Haynes thing. I will try to get hold of such a manual.
