: Gear oil??

Hello everyone,
New guy here with a question: What is the expert opinion on gear oils for tranny/differentials. I have heard that my '90 Wrangler AX15 should not be using a GL5 but only 3 or 4, yet the bottles all seem to say "meets or exceeds" all GL 3, 4 & 5. Also, which vescosities are you guys using for this tranny and the Dana 30 & 35. I see 75/90, 80/90 & 85/140. Is thicker better. Had water in the tranny when I got my Jeep and have some cheap Costal 80/90 in there for now for "flushing" and want to put the best back in. As far as the Dana'a have not dropped them yet but they are on the list for next weekend. Also, what about the Transfer case, drained that and used Dexron 4as recommended. Is there any thing better for the TC.
Thanks in advance,
Lawdawg

A lot of people don't know about it yet, but this lubes just as well as gear oil. It's lighter weight than regular gear oil so your engine runs cooler and makes more RWHP too.

I haven't tried it yet, but you could probably replace your motor oil with it too.

That gear oil is kinda expensive so you can cut it 50/50 with some water. Helps save you a few $$

Dot 3 works better then a clay bar on paint to bring back that show room shine.

Thanks guys,
The WD40 blew up my engine, they only had Dot 4 and that took off my paint down to bare metal. After flushing the TC with the brake fluid I can no longer shift to 4WD. Do you guys think I didn't have an exact 50/50 mix and should have used the Dot 3 like you guys said?
Of course as I said I am a "new guy" so maybe I messed up some how.
Thanks again...........Oh and if I can ever help any of you guys out in my line of expertise.... just let me know.:)

can't tell if this is fake or sarcasm. either way if your so retarted that you can't figure out what type of motor oil to put in your jeep why not go ask the 16 year olds working at autozone instead of the hardcore section a an offroad website. no where in anything you posted has something to do with offroading besides the fact that your jeep has 4wd which it's maybe seen once in the snow.

You mean to tell me that you're supposed to put oil in the TC and engine.seems like an unnessesary expense to me. Piss works just fine in both!

Let me try again and cut through some of your replys,: no where in my post do I mention "motor oil", no where do I mention I do not know what to use in my Jeep, yes my response was sarcasam with a dash of synisism and humour. You guys seem to be good with the sarcasam, synisism not to mention condesending. Also, note that the post asks for "your expert opinion" in another words that' s a compliment. Go to the guys in the know and find out what their using. But it's all good...............now being that it is the season, peace on earth, good will toward man etc........ What gear oils are you guys using.
Thanks & Merry Christmas.

I use Royal Purple in my daily drivers. Amsoil is good stuff too, but even at dealer cost, I can still buy RP local cheaper than shipping the Amsoil in. Just check out the gear oils in the local Wallyworld. they have the GL4 for the tranny. I've read the makeup of GL5 can kill a tranny meant to use GL4. In my off road rigs, I use the correct grade cheapest stuff I can find. It gets changed so often due to water contamination that I'm not worried about it breaking down.

Thank you and I had read conflicting stories on the GL5 not being good for AX15. I am in the process of "cleaning out" front and rear pumpkins (lots of water and mud/muck) with some cheap Costal. Tranny and T/C (ATF in T/C) same thing. When all is cleaned up wanted to put some proven quality lube back in. i will head to Walmart and take a look at what they have. Thanks again for your response and have a great Christmas.

If you really want to get the mud and muck out of your axles you'll have to pull the axles, diff, and pinion, the flush it out well with some brake kleen or something similar. Otherwise, just changing the lube won't do much, you'll never get it all out that way and you'll probably end up cooking your bearings and gears.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did use the brake clean and flushed it out the best I could on the diffs. The T/C and tranny I will flush out a couple times within the next 100 miles and hope for the best The Jeep is coming together slowing but surely. I actually bought it for my youngest son so we can do some "light" 4 wheeling out in Uhwarrie, NC about an 1hr. west of me. It also keeps me busy and is like R&R when not dealing with murderer's, rapist's and child molesters. You know the old saying "a bad day of Jeeping or fixing/working on a Jeep is better then a great day of work".:)
Thanks

you have to be careful with newbs
a mustang site convinced a kid to flush his 4V mod motor with a garden hose while it was idling to fully clean out the crankcase
kinda sad to see the thread asking what broke after he follows the advice
dunno if its a fake but if it is he did a fine job
