: D60 front alloys shaft update
patooyee 09-30-2002, 02:44 PM Well, here is something new. I swear, if someone turns this post into another 1-ton/Rockwell/Mog debate, my head will explode!
I've spoken to Wolfgang Tibus of Killeraxles.com and Tibus Off-Road in Germany about making some 300m front d60 axles. He says he can't do it out of 300m, but can out of AISI 4340. Is this the same as Moser uses? I specifically asked him if the yokes would be hardened, as Moser does not harden theirs, and he said that they would be. Now I know shipping would be a bitch from overseas for something as heavy as axles. He's out of town until Oct. 14th so I won't know anything more until then, either. Basically, my question is this: Would these be any stronger than moser shafts and if someone in Germany can step up to the plate to put out a good product that everyone in America wants, why the fuck can't someone in America, the land of opertunity, do the same?
J. J.
EDIT: PS: In theory, if I knew someone who was able and willing to make 4340 or 300m shafts and harden them throughout the entire legth of the shafts (ie, hardened yokes) for about the price that moser is asking, how many people would be interrested in them?
elf_cruiser 09-30-2002, 02:51 PM that place is awesome. He's also going to do a selectable locker for rockwells. I think that the 4340 shafts would be "killer". And, yes stronger than the Mosers.
patooyee 09-30-2002, 02:55 PM What alloy does Moser use?
J. J.
BillaVista 09-30-2002, 02:56 PM Moser uses 1541m. I'll let you look up the differences in the material properties :flipoff2:
(remember....."stronger" is a subjective thing....depends what kind of "strong" you're after)
But I would hazard a guess that 4340 might be more suitable for your intended application.
Please ask him how he intends to do the hardening when you get a chance....thru hardened or induction hardened or ???
Has anyone heard whats going on with CTM's broached yokes???? I heard they were gonna do them but haven't heard anything else.
JEEPRZ 09-30-2002, 03:01 PM Coming from overseas, he may wanna get in bed with someone stateside that can re-spline for custom lenghts. May help keep costs down by shipping a crate of long shafts insted of individuals or pairs. Just an idea...
Jeepmangled87 09-30-2002, 03:04 PM Why not 300M is it to much money I guess?
call jack at CTM he is building 300m front axles.i am sure he can do them in 4340 if thats all you want.
moser uses 5210 alloy that is better than stock but not as good as 4340. the main draw back is that 5210 does not take a through hardining well so all you can get is just induction hardining.

From what I understand of hardening, you want to harden the material after you've splined it so that you aren't machining off hardened material in the end. Am I wrong on this?

If it's through hardened, it shouldn't matter right? Some types of hardening might distorte the splines enough to mess them up,... but now I'm kinda talking out my a$$.
Of course cutting splines on 4340 or 300M that's been hardened is going to take some kind of kryptonite cutting tool.

edit: I like the idea of a seperate yoke and shaft, seems to me it would cut down the costs of fubars by only requiring replacement of one or the other.

the 300m raw material will cost more than a complete moser shaft. hint: there is a reason 300m is not a common material. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The how does Jack plan on breaking even?

you get what you pay for. he charges just a tad bit more than a moser shaft.
Brawler 09-30-2002, 04:03 PM Jack can make just about anything. He made JR's bronco portal shafts out of 300 m. Give him a call.
GOAT1 09-30-2002, 04:06 PM 300M is about twice the price of 4340, and will be about 25% stronger, 4340 should be plenty strong and will be a vast improvement over oem spicer or anything moser will ever make. You don't need to have get them from Germany, anyone in the states should be able to make them, the problem is no one wants to make them because they would cost at least a grand each to make out of billet, alot of that money ends up as chips on the floor. It would cost over $300 just for material for a 36" long 300M front axle. You could forge the ends, but that is at least 10K in tooling. How many 300M dana 60 axles are you going to sell at over $500 each? My only suggestion is to call CTM, I saw him carrying around a billet 60 axle at Johnson valley, he seems crazy enough to make them.

LOL and i am stupid enuff to have asked him to make them. :D
fyi. did you see my 40 spline 1.710 stub axle or the 35 spliner?
Station 09-30-2002, 04:16 PM I'm going to bring Mog axles into this thread whether you like it or not:p :p.
Just letting you know that I had 2 complete heavy as heck U-1300 axles shipped on a crate by ship from Wolfgang's shop in Germany to New-Orleans for less than $500. I am sure that my crate weigh's a bit more than 1500#'s and took up a good bit of space.
Just shipping shafts form Germany should not cost much at all based on ym experience, espescially if you don't mind waiting a little while for them. I have also heard that you can have smaller things(like axle shafts) air freighted from Germany for not as many $$ as you think.
Hope you don't mind me doing a Mog-shipping- comparison:D ;)

I got a good look at his 35 spline parts...:eek: Absolute works of art! He says it takes him about 3 hours to machine out each yoke. Price? If you have to ask, you can't afford it! :flipoff2:
$3500
ya but that price includes ujoints. :flipoff2:

Yeah, I figured those were yours. I didn't look very close, but I think it was the 40 spline one. Was that the one that came up short?
