i have a 86 cj7 4 speed manual.
its has been garage kept for quite a while, recent i went to move it and the clutch will not engage.
you can move the stick in and out of gear while the car is off with the clutch in or out. but the clutch will not engage to allow you to shift into gears when the jeep is running. anyone have any ideas ? anything help would be appreciated.
thanks,
sean

You should have a hydraulic clutch---check your fluid level 1st
If it's low or out fill it up and pump pedal up, you might have to bleed it. You really didn't give us enough info on your Jeep

you 1st need to tell if you have hyd or not (clutch master next to brake master) if you do--see prev post, if no hyd than you might have a stuck disc, than you will have to remove clutch inspection cover and see if you can free disc by tapping or prying lightly with a screwdriver.

i do not have an hydro, i wish i did.
appears that you can move the stick in and out of 2nd gear, but no others - with or without the clutch engaged. so i guess my disc is stuck ?
what should i look for when i open it up ?
lots of stuff to take off to get to it ?

Wait a minute, what are you trying to say here.. Are you shifting in and out of 2nd gear with the motor running? If so, I am confused. How do you keep the rig from instantly taking off and smashing something? Slow down and be more specific. Chances are, if it is a stuck disk, taking off the inspection plate on the front of the bellhousing isnt going to help you much, unless you have a tool(like a bent flat blade screwdriver, or a drum brake adjuster tool) that can reach behind the flywheel to pry on the clutch disk. You will have to have someone hold the clutch pedal down when you do it.

You are sure the clutch fork moves when you press the pedal right?
Maybe the clutch fork came off the throw out bearing.
Maybe the clutch is frozen on the tranny's input shaft.
Maybe the pilot bushing/ or bearing is frozen to the input shaft.

Help us out here with some more details......

oh she will jump if i start her in gear (2nd).
and if i slide it into netural...no worries. but will grind all gears if i try and engage the clutch and shift into gear when running. i do have a brake tool, so maybe i will try that route. do i have to remove a bunch of stuff to take off the inspection plate ?
i have not really got tooo envolved with the problem, just trying to get some info on what could be the probloem,. oh i know about jeeps. expensive four legged friends.
any info is appreicated.
thanks,
sean

You may have to pull the starter, then the plate. It is the plate that bolts the front lower half of the bellhousing.

I helped a friend with a similar situation this spring.

He parked his Jeep at a inside storage barn for the winter. When he tried to drive it out he couldn't get the clutch to disengage. Then after working at it for a few minutes it would slip when trying to move and still wouldn't fully disengage.

We pulled the cover off and the whole bellhousing and pressure plate were filled with a mouse nest. We had to pull the trans and ended up replacing the clutch.

well i did not wanna start dismantling the clutch, so i thought i would try and shake it loose. shifted it into reverse and cracked it for a few secs. this caused the jeep to lunge in reverse a little, which was able to free the hung plate. works like a champ now. now on to full tub replacement !
