I wanted my sons, Brian (18) and Robby (15) to race the PRP Jeepspeed Wrangler, so I entered them in the Rage at the River at Laughlin NV. There were no 1700's, Class 3's or anything like them, so they told me that we would be racing 1450. 1450's are limited to a steel cab and steel doors, that's it. Everything else is unlimited and some of these trucks are crazy fast.
We drew the 6th starting position, but on race day, requested a rear start and they let us start in the back, just in front of the VORR trucks, (V6 class 1 buggies with truck bodies.) There were about 30-35 cars including the VORR's.
The boys started side by side next to a new chevy silverado, V-8 truck with links and all the goodies of a full race truck. The flag dropped and the Wrangler pulled 5-6 car lengths on the truck. It didn't last, but it was cool as Bob Green watched the chevy's co-dog look over at the Wrangler, then look back at the driver in amazement. I told Rob to watch the mirrors like a hawk and Brian to be ready to pull over. But 11.8 miles later they come flying through the infield in the heat of the race. They were in 16th place. As laps came and went they got better and better, averaging 38 on their last lap and finishing the first day in 12th position.
Second day, same format, but had to start in the 12th spot with a lot of very fast trucks behind them. They left the line again taking the other car off the line and kept a good pace on a very wet track. They brought the car around for every lap without issues and finished the second day in 9th position.
I couldn't be more proud of my sons for giving it hell and keeping the car together. Good job boys!
