My neighbor has a 89 yj with a blown 2.5l engine and and a bad transmission. He has a low mileage 4.3l v6 that he would like to put in it. My question is what is a good trans and transfer case combo to put behind it. taking suggestions on a manual and or automatic. (700R4 with a Dana 300). Thank you in advanced for all the input.

This is exactly what I am planning on doing in mine. 2.5 is weak (weaker than it was to begin with) and the tranny is shot (not uncommon) I searched a great deal on the whole swap and came to the conclusion that it is less expensive if you grab drivetrain from one vehicle that is all bolted together than buy a bunch of adapters...

4.3 to SM465 to Atlas if rockcrawling is your game.

Will the SM465 bolt straight to the 4.3l v6 or do you need any king of adaptor. Also is it a 4 or 5 speed. I talked with my neighbor and it will mostly be used as a daily driver with light off roading. What other manual trans bolt to the 4.3l. Also will the stock transfer case bolt straightto the sm465 or do you need any adaptors. He is not in a rush to do this so I am exploring all options for him. Thanks for all your input.

If it's just gonna be a DD, get a 5 speed and t-case from an S-10 and call'er good. If he isn't gonna really wheel it, a 465 is a waste.

the SM465 will bolt to the SBC and has a really nice low first, it is a 4 speed though.

And you will need an adapter from the 465 to T/C. Crashnzuk is right, If it is a DD and not used for wheeling the 465 is a waste.

Go to Novak adapters website and look in the "FAQ" section and they have some good info on the myth's of overdrive transmissions and fuel mileage..Maybe the 4 speed wouldn't be so bad depending on your setup...Have a look and see...
