HooperSSII 10-12-2001, 09:17 AM Here is Caine working the rocks at NWRCA 2001. Just scanned this one in this morning. Sorry about the size, but you have to see it big to really appreciate it.

And, yes it is IH, partly, mostly, used to be.
It is an IH engine, hood, and grille, and last I heard it was an IH firewall, also.

345 last I heard - but it was gettin' tired and Jason was asking if I knew of any 392s.. at the time, I didn't have an extra to part with. ;-)
I don't know if it's still the tired 345, or if he's gone to something else..

Pretty sure he is running a 345. It has been in there, and knocking for several years. He says it has a flat cam, but it does not seem to lack for power.
Course, he has extreme gearing, also.
nwmud 10-12-2001, 09:54 AM He sure was entertaining to watch. Did anyone get some pics of the awesome handstand he did?

Not me. But someone did.

This is the only shot I have of that incident.

What in the hell happened. Was he trying to set the land speed record?

Nope. It was a bad obstacle.
It was a severe vertical drop. At least 36 inches, probably closer to 40. Vertical, sheer. Just as your front tires go off, your rear tires climb a ledge, kind of like a speed bump. So, your rear axle is moving up, while your front axle is moving down. Your whole rig is rotating along its axis. If you go down slow, that rotation motion will carry you onto your top.
The trick was to launch off the front so that your front tires were moving horizontally when your back tires hit the bump. That kept momentum from dumping you on your top. It also meant that you were airborne off the obstacle. It also meant that when your front tires hit the ground, they were able to drive the front end out from under the rear. It was a definite second gear spot.
Many, many rigs endo'd at this spot. Caine did a nose plant, but got on the gas so his front end could drive out from under.
Another problem folks had is that when the front end hit the ground, their engine would stall, so you would have dead engine slowing front tires, while rear tires were airborne, also ended with many endo's.
Didn't help that just below the obstacle, there were a pair of really big rocks buried in the sand that your front tires ran into, also causing the front end to stop as the rear end tried to overtake the front. It was just a bad spot.

Y'know, this competitive rock-crawling business is more and more like our 4-hi racing every day! Lightening up the rigs, more throttle jockeys, coil-overs, 4-links.. knowing to stand on the skinny pedal when you nose down on a jump..
Maybe a pair of Lockrights into my short-course racer and I, too, can be an NWRCA competitor..
The more I learn and do in one aspect of this sport, the more it seems applicable to the other side. :-)

Mutliple IH owner.
One for slow, one for GO, one to Tow..

Not far off.
Looked to me like low COG, and big tires were the key to success on the whole thing. 38's did OK, but the folks with 42's were king of the show.
In fact, some of the rigs didn't have much flex, it was all horsepower and tires.
Other rigs, like Caine's had the HP, tires, and flex. Turning radius caused him problems.
tough course, all the way around.

I agree, thanks Hooper
CAINE 10-13-2001, 04:14 PM Thank's again Hooper.
Everything that's left IH is-
Motor, 345 injected with 1 intake has flat lobe
Trany, T-19 wide case
SS grill, hood fire wall and floor, stearing colum, and 6' of frame.

How'd you score? and is that thing legal on the streets? I know that Marc Milner told me his EB is just barely legal, and it's got about as much body mods as yours, from what I see.
but thats UT, not WA
CAINE 10-16-2001, 10:50 PM Check out the score's at www.nwrca.com (http://www.nwrca.com) .
No it's not street legal anymore. I still drive it on the road localy. Braken the law, braken the law. I wonder if the cop's would try to fallow me. Hmmmm I'll have to go find out.
