Is a 86 manual Dodge Power ram tranny good for granny? or a 78 dodge ram charger Automatic good?
ALLLlso if i got the chevy 4 speed 465 2wd tranny can i convert it to fit my 231 transfer case??
thanks a lot.
*sigh* I feel dirty responding to this:rolleyes:
OK, the truck may or may not have a granny gear trans, you will actually have to determin what it is befor eyou ask that. Or drive it.....if you are only in first for a VERY short tim eor find yourself starting in seconed gear it is a granny tranny.
As for the auto....well, no, it is not a low gear trans, it is a auto and autos by nature are not as cool. Chicks will not dig you if you choose an auto.
The SM465 will mate to a NP231, I used to run this combo. It will reduce the life of the 231 quite a bit....this is why a *used* to run that combo.

The 86 Dodge should be a NP435. Also you will be able to bolt your 231 to the back of it. Would I do it, hell no! The low gear in that thing will show you first hand why the 231 is in a jeep and not a fullsize.

the 231 will split in half under that kind of gearing, if you need a tranny to bolt to a 231 better go Jeep tranny.

Huh? I'm running a Chevy SM420 bolted up to a NP231 via a Novak adapter, it works great, and the SM420 reverse idler bulge on the passenger side is of no concern in a driver's drop application, such as a Wrangler. My NP231 has had no complaints so far, but it is getting replaced with a flipped Dana 300 this winter.

So the 207 I had behind my SM465 for 3-4 years must have been MUCH stronger then a 231. And my 231 lasted fairly good as well.
Just curious but have you run this combo very much?

So with this reasoning a 231 would last longer behind a Jeep T18 w/6.32 first than it would behind the Dodge 435 w/6.40 first?  Would it matter what was planted in front of the tranny?:flipoff2:

Oh so I was running a "split" 231 for five years behind my T98 with 6:1 first gear:rolleyes:
The 231 is not the greatest, but it will last behind a granny gear tranny. Just take it easy on the skinny pedal.

I wouldn't call the 231 junk, but for how I run things, not the best choice out there. Espicaly when you consider all the choices out there. Bolt in to a dodge tranny 300, 208, 203, 205. Jeep, 208, 300, 207. Ford tranny, any case except 20 and 21.
Then again I am a little hard on things, evey stick needs to grab gear. It's just for me, if I were to swap trannies, I would swap out the case as well.
