: 2nd annual 55 run "P.A.A" roll call
fc187 09-30-2002, 06:42 PM lets get a roll call for the 2nd annual fj55 run. Oct 12&13 The DeerValley trail Ca
Location:
From HWY 88
Take HWY 88, 12 miles East of Kirkwood to Blue Lakes Road. Turn right on Blue Lakes Road and travel 11.5 Miles to Lower Blue Lake (The last five miles being gravel road). You will come to the PG&E caretaker’s station/campground at Lower Blue Lake, you will know this because you just drove back on to asphalt. Go to the left below the dam following the creek, there is a sign marking the trail. Meet at trail head at Blue Lake @1pm
----------------------------> Or...<-----------------------
from Hwy 4
Take HWY 4, 9 miles East of Lake Alpine. On the right side watch for sign indicating Hermit Valley Campground, this may not be visible from the road unless you are looking off to the right side. There is a cement block restroom near the entrance to the trail. The trail was not marked last time I went through but if you find yourself climbing up a hard rock section you have found it. Don’t get discouraged the last 100 feet of the trail on this end is probably the roughest of the whole trail. Meet at trail head on hwy 4 @10;30 am
Put my pig down- I'm there! :fj:

fc187 10-02-2002, 12:13 PM OK, here is the deal,........ 2 groups are going in. One fron the Hwy 88 side (easy) one from the Hwy4 side (harder) . I will be a part of the hwy 4 group. we plan on being at the trail head at 10:30 Sat morning. The trail head is on hwy4 about 20 min past Bear Valley.
Don Anway (red dog) will lead a group in from the Hwy88 side also Sat morning. I will post the when and where for that option soon.

Reddog 10-02-2002, 01:42 PM I've already got some people meeting me at my place in Pioneer Saturday morning. We were going to leave my place around 11:AM.
That'll put us on the trail head at Bllue Lakes sometime around 1:PM
We can all meet at my place in Pioneer, or at the rest stop at the top of Carson Pass, or at the turn-off to Blue Lakes.
I'm still planning on putting up some pie plates.

Like having 1.59 times as much money in Canada.
We are rich in pigs. I'm bummed that we're not seeing any other pig gatherings for October 12th. Tyler, why don't you get a Canadian pig herd together?
I saw a lot of FJ55s in Colorado (http://www.hahaha.org/album/cycling/moab-durango-tahoe/), this summer. Too bad there's no mountain-states gathering.

fc187 10-04-2002, 12:22 PM Hey Bill! (BK) Josh is going isnt he? sign him up!(1)

morgan 10-04-2002, 12:51 PM Sent emails to Jake "Youngdogs" McCready, Bill Jackson, W. Harrold and Mike Knorr, asking if they were also going. Also Dennis Owen. (The guy with the tan 55 who brought his son on last year's pig run.) Eric Lint (red/white 55, beat rockers, good driver) said he can't make it. Alan Lunghi has sold Big Stinky. Clark Staves' 55 is no more.
Morgan
I haven't seen a response from Jake (youngdogs)- but when I talked to him last, he sounded like he was in... (5)
My exhaust is getting done today, and I have a week to get my drivelines worked on- so mine should be ready to roll. (fingers crossed...)
Zipp. :fj:
fc187 10-04-2002, 01:02 PM Shit!, Mike should have Dale drive his other 55, so he can bring 2

Oh yeah: And Eric Hassett's (14th pig) is up at 4x4labs and under the knife for a spring-over. It won't be ready in time.
Morgan
Morgan- Have you gotten ahold of youngdogs? I haven't seen any posts by him- If you want, I'll give him a call this weekend.
Just got my rear driveline done- Monday I'm gonna take care of the front one. Almost ready!

YoungDogs 10-08-2002, 09:15 PM Don & Morgan,
Well, I didn't know until tonight, but it looks like 2 of my boys & I will be able to go! :fj: Whoo Hoo!
RHINO 10-08-2002, 09:57 PM unfortunately timing is just not gonna work out for me, but i so wanted to go.
Allright Jake!!! Good to see that you can make it. So does that mean that we're up to 14 pigs???
I'm giddy just thinking about it.
Has anyone given any thought to traveling up there in a pig caravan? Safety in numbers, ya know...
:fj:
morgan 10-09-2002, 12:18 PM Looks like we're at fourteen pigs! (http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/pigrun.html). We need one more to show to make a new record. I'm working on a couple local FJ55-driving friends to try to convince them to make it. There are three in Oakland that aren't currently signed up to do it.
I think a caravan is a great idea. I'm planning on meeting Don at the awful hour of 6:30AM in Stockton, leaving Oakland at 5:00AM. Anyone want to join us, going in on the 4 side?
Morgan
How difficult is the 4 side? I just finished up with a bunch of modifications (almost all of them), and I haven't been able to really drive it yet. I don't have the feel for it yet, nor do I know what it is capable of. I also don't have an anti-wrap bar.
88 or 4... I've still got a couple of days to decide. But I'm leaning towards the 4 side. :fj:
micah103 10-10-2002, 03:51 AM I would realy like to go but I can't find a windshield. The only people who were selling them were out of california. I even tried (gasp) tap recycling! I was considering a motorcycle helmet instead...
YoungDogs 10-10-2002, 01:20 PM Two things:
1) Brandon – I’m happy to caravan the pigs down. Are you leaving from Chico or Lincoln? I’m leaving Saturday morning. I still don’t know which side (88 or 4) I’ll go in on.
2) I talked to Paul White (here in Loomis), and he may come as well. He has a 72? Spring-over with 35s.
Reddog 10-10-2002, 03:05 PM Drove thru Deer Valley today, nailed up a half dozen pie plates. I hope they're still there by Saturday, the wind was blowin a hundred miles an hour up in that valley ! A couple plates got away, I think the wind carried them twnety miles before I caught up to them J K
Anyway here's a few tidbits of info......
If you are coming in on Highway 88 from the Tahoe side, the Blues Lakes turnoff is about a mile west of the junction of Highway's 88 and 89.
If you are coming up from the valley, like Stockton, the Blue Lakes turnoff is exactly 12.5 miles east of Kirkwood Meadows Ski Resort.
The sign on the highway will say " Sno Park " , "Hope Valley Campground" and "Blue Lakes 12 miles". The road only goes one way, South.
So go south for twelve miles and you'll come to a fork in the road. There'll be a sign there with a map of the lakes and the camp grounds. Take the narrow road to the left.
A couple hundred yards and you'll see a small sign marking the head of the Deer Valley Trail. At that point you'll be at Lower Blue Lake.
Suggestion, for those of you that are bone stock, I would say come in on the 88 side. It's a lot milder than the Highway 4 side.
BTW FC where do you plan on setting up camp Sat nite ?
I don't know exactly when I'll be going up but if I see anyone lost along the way I'll have them follow.

I have a cracked one (w/rubber) if you just need "a windshield"
its yours if you want it.
Plus,...If it makes you feel any better,... I will be driving up without a windshield:D
:fj:
fc187 10-10-2002, 03:48 PM who is going in hwy 4?
and
who is going 88?
so we can stay in groups and and so we know who we are waiting for.

CanadianPigLover 10-11-2002, 09:48 AM I so wanna be there, but its a long trek, and I dont think my pig is up for it yet!

Hey CanadianPigLover - is that like Canadian Bacon?:D J/K man! Wish you could make it. Tilt a Molson on Satuday and pretend you are there; maybe sleep in the back of your piggie?
70Cruzer 10-11-2002, 10:16 AM sorry about the non update. Im gonna follow
fc threw the 4 side. Or more likely he is gonna
drag me through it. but his rig seems up to the task
that is for sure.
Id also like to publicly thank don and Jim for helping
me on a few late night sessions on gettting this thing
going. they have actually worked on it more than I have due
to time constraints. so to you guys
morgan 10-11-2002, 11:04 AM We are now at 16 pigs!
http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/pigrun.html
I've tried to represent who's going in which trailhead, and when.
If you read this before tomorrow, heh, let me know which one you're going in, when, and stuff like that. I am meeting Don at a Denny's in Stockton at 6:30AM. Anyone want to caravan from Oakland or Stockton or somewhere else on the route, let me know!
I've heard there's no campfires allowed in the national forest, except at designated camp sites and with a permit. So... bring warm clothes.

Not this time. Taking today off. Hope to have the truck packed and ready today.
Just need to tighten bolts, swap a tire, pack, that sort of thing.
Gotta go get those heaters from Ross.
Morgan
YoungDogs 10-11-2002, 01:00 PM I just got off the phone with Paul White. He wants to come, but has lots of commitments and still doesn’t know if he will go. He’ll talk with his girlfriend and should make a decision by 9pm tonight.
I’m planning on leaving Loomis at 0900 Saturday and will come in on 88. Don (Reddog) keep an eye out for me. I’m guessing we’ll hit Pioneer around 1100. Since I don’t know where you live (or wither you’re meeting at your house, the turn off or the rest stop), I’m planning to keep going until I’m at the trail head (or run across other :fj: ).
Brandon, give me a call at home if you want to caravan down. (From Loomis; Auburn Folsom Road to El Dorado Hills down to 16, to 49 to 88. It doesn’t matter which side you decide to go in on. We can caravan down to 88 and split-up there if you decide to go in on 4.
70Cruzer 10-11-2002, 03:50 PM man I just got a bad feeling, Im gonna make the ugly cruiser of the week post next week :D :D :D
Here we stand on the eve of the almighty pig run.
Rest up little piggies- tomorrows going to be a big day...
Jake! I'll give you a call tonight- but yeah, let's caravan! I can meet you whenever tomorrow morning, and I'm planning on going in on the 88 side too, so... I just have a little bit of welding to take care of tonight, and we're set. Talk to you then!
-did you catch that Morgan? Brandon Zipp- 88 side. (for the books)
:fj:
morgan 10-11-2002, 05:33 PM Gotcha Brandon. :)
http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/pigrun.html
Looks like just about everyone is going in highway 88.
fc187, call me or email me with the Denny's info.
Morgan, 510-418-0256
Reddog 10-11-2002, 06:52 PM There'll be a bunch of us meeting on the 88 side at Caples lake. We'll be there between 12 noon and 1pm. That's where I'll top off my gas tank and have lunch. Look for three FJ40s. It'll be me, Andy Plaine and Chris Norton.
We'll be watchin for a heard of pigs a comin up the highway :D
Caples Lake is 24 miles from the head of the Deer Valley Trail.
The Lake's spillway is right next to the entrance of Kirkwood Meadows Ski Resort. There's a gas station and a resturant there, right on the highway, you can't miss it. ;)
Oh I almost forgot, CB channel 12
YoungDogs 10-11-2002, 10:24 PM Brandon,
I sent you a PM.
Give me a call (660-1711) and meet me at my house, I'll planning on leaving between 0830 - 0900.
- Jake
