: whats with this damn holley truck avenger?
soljahca 09-30-2002, 08:21 PM Has anyone put a new holly truck avenger carb on? Ive had this thing going since mid june and the carb. has givin me nithing but trouble. It didnt have any power at first at high rpm(3500-4000) but then i changed the jets and messed around with the air fuel mixture which helped for sure. But now it doesnt like to idle smoothely and almost dies. Also I took it out to the rubicon and it did o.k. for the first hour then it didnt want to stay running idle or anything in fact i could barely get it started after it died every 2 seconds. Any advise????????????? This sucks!!!!!!!
also after it started running bad on the trail after an hour or so, when i turned it off for half hour or more it ran good again for a while.?
FJ-Dave 09-30-2002, 08:24 PM three words...
E. F. I.
or an edelbrock carb with an off road kit.
good luck.
Big DW 09-30-2002, 08:27 PM unless you plan on spending alot of time and money getting that card dialed-in, save yourself the hassle...sale it or throw it in the trash...mine went in the dumpster a long time ago.
ranger 09-30-2002, 08:57 PM Holleys and Edelbrock carbs aren't worth a crap for off road. Sure you can tweak the edlebrock and get it to work marginally, but it really sucks trying to start your truck on a steep grade when your carb keeps loading up.
Fuel injection is the way to go, but it has it downsides too. But for off camber situations thats the ticket. :skull:
Bundok 10-01-2002, 06:39 AM Go for some Hillybilly Fuel Infection! Quadrajet! Not as good as EFI but a whole lot less shit to break, easy to fix once you learn how they work, every old school wrench can fix them for you and parts are everywhere. Buy one for $20 bucks used, get the parts to rebuild it and your in action.
Northern Autoparts sells a great Quadrajet Rebuild video.
Lots of people say that Quadrajets are hard to work on, If you follow the directions to reseal the main shaft, it pretty easy to get one working really well if it's worn out.

ckolloff 10-01-2002, 06:58 AM My edelbrock ran for shit until I installed the spring loaded offroad needle set- about $10. Now it runs great- not EFI but good enough for me on my budget.
arndog 10-01-2002, 09:11 AM I think he is asking about hollys new offroad carb that is supposed to work for steep and off camber situations
arndog
soljahca 10-01-2002, 01:11 PM Yeah thats right supposed to but doesnt. I talked to the holly tech and thry said to put a 2.5 power valve in and go three sizes down on the jets which i did and it ran worse, no power barely idled still. So i put it back the way it was with a 6.5 power vavle and it runs o.k. but still idles shitty. Time to call holley again.
FUCK CARBS
I just got TBI because I am tired of my Mother Fucking Carb.
FUCK CARBS
CARBS CAN LICK MY HAIRY NUTS

Jason M 10-01-2002, 04:26 PM You guys need to relax. My holley worked perfecty....
sixty 10-01-2002, 04:37 PM A fuel regulator turned down to like 1 or 2 psi will work wonders w/ a carb off road.
hey Jason..... if that holley worked so well then why did you go to propane? :D  :flipoff2: ;)
warpdriv 10-01-2002, 07:01 PM Edelbrock with spring loaded offroad needle set and a fuel reg.
Set the reg. to 1.5 psi for the trail.:D
Gunmetalcruz 10-01-2002, 08:16 PM Fernando,
If you can get the carb dialed in, we are going to go out to Fordyce this weekend. My Steering box should be here on thursday and hopefully slap her in. AGR:D I bunch of the truckee cruiser guys are going.

Because I filled up the oil pan with gasoline. No more.
Plus, when the cruiser was almost vertical the holley would not work quite as well as it should...

Mud Guppie 10-02-2002, 09:51 AM Screw Holley!
I've been running a TBI for over 5 years in my daily driver FJ40 with no problems.
mrgadget 10-03-2002, 06:32 PM I used to have that problem, what you need is a Cagle vacuum operated fuel pressure regulator, they are not made anymore, but I have a couple new ones I purchased, these keep the fuel pressure at about 1 pound at idle and when you get on it, it opens up for full fuel pump pressure....they are great, $45 plus shipping from So. Calif.
