Recently purchased a knife from Anza Knives www.anzaknives.com and figured I would throw them out here for y'all....When I called to place my order the owner actually answered the phone, Charlie, and chatted me up about what I was looking for. Great guy with a first rate product. The knives are truly works of art.

Quick video about how he makes his knives... YouTube - Anza Knives founder Charlie Davis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybMDdLpMAvQ)

Made in the USA and a great story. Pics when I dig out my camera

They look like decent cutting blades, but if you tried to stab with them you'd find yourself minus a finger. No quillon=no stabby.

Seriously? I don't have a knife with a quillon on it. None of my skinning/gutting knives or my pocket folders

Did you look at their catalog? The splash page isn't a good representation

Nope, never had the need. All of my military style knives and bayonets have adequate protection for my hand should I need to though. I've got plenty of kick ass kitchen knives I got in Germany that wouldn't make good fighting knives. If all I was going to use them for was chopping veggies and the like I wouldn't care. On the off chance you actually do need to stab somebody with though it would be nice to have a grip shaped appropriately to keep your fingers intact.

you have me very interested. i need to call this guy and talk to him.

i wonder how well they keep and edge and how well they stand up to breaking through bone joints, like tails and pelvis on deer and hogs? My guide partner was busting a pelvis along the joint saturday and the force on the knife blade warped his blade like a sine wave.

thats what you get for 20 bucks at academy!

Doesn't sound like it was the knife's fault. You were using the wrong tool for that job.

there is a ridge along the pelvis that will split open if you run the knife up under it. it works fine with my knives.... a gerber and a german made solingen. there are other tools you can use, but my tools work just fine. it was definitely the knifes fault that it failed.

i called and talked to the owner a little while ago. Great guy to talk to and gave me some direction when i told him what i would be using his knives for. pointed me toward a couple of good models. he has a shit-ton of choices, and thats going to be the hardest part.

i think i am leaning to the 711 or 721 or the 10-1 M.

I won't buy anything from Academy unless I absolutely have to...way to much chinese crap. My GF's dad has one and it was put together beautifully. His had an elk antler handle. The edge on it was no joke!

He makes his knives out of tool grade steel. Spefically, steel files. He shapes, hardens, and hones each blade by hand.

well, i got my knives in the mail a couple days ago and i went with the 10-1M and the SP-1. Both knives look and feel like sturdy workhorses, but we will see as i have 2 four-day guides coming up in the next three weeks.

my only reservation is they seem a little smaller than i was hoping for, but if they cut good and do what they should, ill be more than happy. maybe because i am used to using a 9 inch and now dropping down to an 8 inch feels a little different.

the smaller SP-1 (still at 7.5 inches) will most likely be for more detailed caping.

ill update again with some pictures, maybe, and a performance review. :grinpimp:

Files are great, and another knife making material is a used sawmill blade, 2'-6' diameter (yes feet).

He openly states they're made from files - Files are usually W1 or W2 tool steel.
