: Daily Topic - Weekend Projects - 10/15
jdjanda 10-14-2001, 08:15 PM What project, repair, upgrade, etc did you complete on your rig this weekend. Maybe you were lucky enough to make a run, but I was not. I complete the repairs to the rear frame body mounts. Let's just say I won't have any more problems back there.
Pre-repair Work

jdjanda 10-14-2001, 08:20 PM Here is the finished work. There is a slight up tilt, hopefully over time it will level out, but at least I can open the pass door now.

makkat 10-14-2001, 08:42 PM Swapped a new engine in the 800B. You think the spun bearing and the 7 others that were about to follow had anything to do with the guy not being able to start the motor. Kinda makes you wonder what a "good" used motor really is.
RustoleumWhite 10-14-2001, 10:09 PM ummm.....
I FINALLY replaced the lock cylinder in the ignition, tired of the basal (no key ) falling off at the most in opportune time...
What a PITA, would have been simple if the steering wheel lock plate tool I got at Sear fit the Scout/Vega steering shaft. Had to "improvise" (didn't have the proper tool on hand to make the service tool spelled out in the manual).
then I put the charger on the (dead from neglect ) battery and worked on stripping the Corp 10-bolt housing that is going to "donate" its tubes to my RC D44 housing project.
That involved the sledge hammer
then blew the rest of the day with the GF
no wheeling, wanted to, and was thinking of it, but I haven't gone through the thing in a while, I really need to put the top back on, and a couple other little things I have been neglecting...

Kinda like the "rebuilt" 345 I tore down with stock pistons (slapping, of course) and a new Comp Cam.
Glad to hear your got the new 800 home! I'm jealous!
We put the rollbar in, reinstalled the gas tanks, and dropped the hardtop back on Michelle's '68 800 today. The headliner/insulation has to go before the top'll actually bolt back on, but we'd vacuumed the snow, rain, and leaves out of the interior and didn't want to leave it "exposed" again.
Cruised the boneyards on Saturday and located two more IC392s, a few 800 half cabs in good shape, and a lower steering column for my Travelall that I should've bought, but didn't (yet). Also located a KB-7... fortumately, there isn't room in the yard.

Scout Dude 10-15-2001, 06:18 AM I think that I finally cured my power steering overheating woes. I bought a new pump, added a remote resevoir for additional fluid, and added a larger P/S cooler. I put in my new (to me) shocks in the rear for even more flex (like I really needed that!).
Cliffy [JD] 10-15-2001, 07:18 AM I had big plans to put my *new* fender on, but couldn't find a babysitter. I do have one lined up for this weekend though.
I ordered new body bushings and they came in but unfortunatly, without realizing it, I only ordered HALF a set. So I have to wait for the other half to come in. 7-10 business days.
I did get a lot of house cleaning done with teh wife though so things are good on the homefront. (Those of you who are married know that this makes it easier for me to say "hey I'm gonna go work on the truck tonight" w/out getting the 3rd degree )
Zane Znamenacek 10-15-2001, 07:19 AM Finally got around to building something better than the stock front bumper. I built a receiver hitch into it and welded on two D-rings.
Also built a cradle for my winch (which has been sitting in my living room for 2 months now) that will fit in either the front or rear receiver hitch. Then I mounted the winch solenoid box inside the cab and ran cables to each end.
I finally not only have front tow points, but also a winch!!
oldjeep 10-15-2001, 07:34 AM The 800 got most of it's important wiring, built a new place to put the battery, and got the grill modified to clear the electric fan.
Just need to get the carb rebuilt, and it may actually run.

I run a big transmission cooler on my power steering - haven't boiled the fluid out since installing that.

Yeah, I had a really small P/S cooler from a Caddy that I used, but it sucks with the 36's and the locker. The newest cooler is about 4x's as large but doesn't take up a whole lot of space infront of the radiator. I'm trying to keep the amount of stuff in front of the radiator down to a minimum because I already had issues with the Chevy SB overheating and I don't want to stir up those problems again.
makkat 10-15-2001, 10:19 AM On the racer, I took a full size ford van tranny cooler for a PS cooler and put it between the radiator and the headlight. This keeps it away from in front of the radiator but still in the flow of air.
On the trail rig, I have a B&M street rod cooler in the same place as a tranny cooler. I will be adding a larger tranny cooler and turn the B&M into a PS cooler.

It's bikini weather, ya big wimp!!!
BTW, thanks for the invite.

BTDT
My wife is getting smart. I say, "So, what should we work on around the house?" She says "Why, what do you need to do to your truck?"
scoutman 10-15-2001, 12:13 PM Not much got done other than routine maintance. Changed oil, regapped the plugs and checked the timing. Also refilled rear end, and am trying some 140 weight oil in the streering box to see if that will stop the leak, if not the top of the box will come off and grease will go in there. before you guys get all worried about 140 weight ina ps box, I am running the stock amnual steering box in my '66 800, so 140 is not bad for it. Hope to get out and wheel this next weekend. Just gotta find time in betwwen the 2nd round of tests.

Yes, now all I need to do if figure out how to reverse the rotation of my engine.
Can I do this by re-routing my spark plug wires
makkat 10-15-2001, 02:11 PM I thought it was just a matter of puting the spark plug wires on backwards.....

OK, what do you mean by backwards; reverse of firing order, or just put the little boot looking end on the plugs and the straight end on the distributor.

TERRA-IZER 10-15-2001, 02:19 PM Didn't even start my truck up all weekend, started to replace the floors, body mounts, inner/outer rockers on another guys scout, hopefully finish in the next couple of days.

Yep! As long as you get a reverse-rotation cam from a Palmer Marine SV-8 to go with the backwards wires.
I *think* that's all you need. I don't think the crank needs replaced.

This might be more work than I thought. BTW do they have *high performance* reverse rotation cams at Palmer?

That doesn't work too well. You need to figure out how to get gas IN through the exhaust because the flames will shoot OUT the carb.
BTDT when I first fired the Travelall. Somewhere along the way from facing West looking at the Scout's disty and turning around to face East to look at the T'all disty (parked grille to grille) I managed to get the rotation backwards.
But.. with the right camshaft...

*shrug* I don't even know if Palmer is still in business!
'course, you could go to a custom cam grinder and tell 'em to make a "backwards" Isky cam profile or similar.
Old Scout 10-15-2001, 02:38 PM WOW the reverse rotation is a bioach! TRUST ME I have Done IT!!! I reversed the rotation on the 440 in my boat.
1. A automotive distributor will walk out of the engine. The gears are cut to pull the distributor into the engine and if you spin it backwards it will want to pop out.
2. The rear main seal will leak bad. There are little groves in the crank that will move oil away from the seal and they will push oil into the seal if spun backwards.
3. water pump will not work.
4. oil pump volume is cut by 20%
There are a few more but I will not go there.
ASK any Mopar guys if they have seem one of these? Two gear cam drive for a BB chrysler!(VERY RARE$$$$)

Your field of vision would be alot better if you had your front seat mounted back by the tailgate.
skeetshooter 10-16-2001, 05:49 AM Here's what ya do:
Mount the driver's seat facing out the tailgate,
connect a linkage to the skinny pedal, gearshift and brake pedal,
mount a steering wheel to the tailgate with a pillow block bearing be sure and put a sprocket on the steering shaft then run a jackshaft with sprockets on both ends up to the original steering shaft remove steering wheel and mount another sprocket where wheel was you may have to mount a 90 degree gear box to make the sprockets line up. but this will work. not only do you now have rear steering but variable ratio rear steering just by changing sprocket sizes. Allis Chalmers made a rear steer tractor this way I know we used to have one.
