Has anyone ever tried to set up a Scout II with a fold down windshield? <IMG SRC="smilies/laughing.gif" border="0">

I was looking at the way the windshield is held on my 1971 and was thinking it might not be too hard to make that swing. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
Opinions or ideas? <IMG SRC="smilies/idea.gif" border="0">

3 bolts per side and it comes right out.. why bother making it fold? <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

has anybody done this or seen it done? I just trashed my w/s frame and I wouldn't mind having a folding windshield

One advantage would be - where do you put the windshield when wheeling? <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0"> In the back where it can bounce and break? <IMG SRC="smilies/jeep1.gif" border="0"> I have three of these things and think I might try to make a folding windshield. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> I got one thats wasted anyway, so it would be the purfect choice. But this is still a project to wait for a while. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
This weekend we got the front end, doors, top, bulkhead, tailgate, and most of the engine apart on the 1971. The tub will be the final choice for my use. It's going on a 76 chassis. the 74 is basically extra parts.

IMO, part of the problem is that these things flex about *too much* as it is when they're fixed to the firewall. I *had* a brand new perfect windshield.

Then I took the top off and started wheelin' the Scout harder n' harder until I broke the windshield just from body flex and the unsupported windshield frame.

It's definitely stress cracks - currently only in the bottom-pass corner of the 'glass.

I'd be making sure that any folding windshield frame was solidly locked into the upright position and supported so it won't flex.

Also - are you planning on running a soft-top or bikini top? Most of them mount to the windshield frame. I've seen 'em mounted to the rollcage, but then there's a gap between the 'cage and the windshield when you're driving with the 'glass up in a NW rainshower..

hmmmmm ugly.. but functional...........

I had intended on doing something along the lines of building a fold-down windshield for my beast... I ended up just tearing my old windshield frame out, because like tsm1mt said, my windshield started cracking from hard wheeling, because I never ran a top. So right now mines windshield-less... and with my new cage it looks REALLY sweet... so I'm trying to decide between putting a new windshield frame in thats not rusty, or just leaving it without a windshield and fixing it up where we butchered it when we took it out.

Wheelin down here in Oklahoma is pretty nasty sometimes, as far as mud and stuff goes, and as far as my tires stick out, I don't think it could get any worse as far as throwing mud around.... mines mainly for rocks, but some of the trails are pretty nasty.

On a lighter side, this cage that I got from twistedscout is SWEET!
Makes the Scout look like a cross between a VIPER RT, and a chop-topped 72 Chevy... as odd as that sounds... :)
