Broken sunshell is a common problem. It's more then likely either the sunshell or the reverse clutches toast.

if it was a shell he wouldnt have second gear as well as the no rewind. my vote is on the reverse/input clutches being toast. what does the fluid look like? i guess that i have had one trans that still had forward with a bad shell, but thats out of about 500 trannys. it was a wierd one...

Broken shell would be no reverse, 2nd, or 4th. Worn clutches would result in no reverse as well as a very weak first gear and 4x4 Lo range. Could also a torn/worn out reverse piston lip seals.

What the heck does 4 Low have to do with a trans??? :shaking::shaking:

Most common no reverse complaints are:

Reverse Input clutches toast (add the reduced orifice in the piston)
low reverse clutches toast. (You will still have first gear even if they are smoked)

MOST common would be the sun shell, then the clutches. also yes the no 4th but i was just saying at least no 2nd just simply because he said he lost REVERSE ONLY.

I have had a couple shells lately that the splines wore to the point they would bend slighty and allow it slip one direction and catch the other, posibly allowing it to retain second and lose reverse. usually I can hear a broken or stripped shell if the truck is quiet in the exhaust department. it will be a buzz if its slipping or a ringing if its broke. Used to see all of them brake the splined portion off, but not as many lately have been broken, just stripped.
