: TOTW: Winter 02-03 plans
Welcome to the next installment of the
Topic of the Week
Well, the wheeling season is winding down for most of the country. Those of you in Aridzona, So-Cal and other such places can go pound all that desert sand. :flipoff2:
What are your winter buildup plans?
I'll go first.
I'm going to have my Scrambler up and running. It most certainly will not be done as planned orginally, but it will be driveable and have valid tags on it so I can at least tool around town and go on some trail rides.
withamc 10-01-2002, 12:26 PM Extend the front shock mounts, beef up the roll cage and tie it in to the frame, new cage mounted seats, ARB up front, all to give a CALROCS Stock Modified a shot.
sothpaw 10-01-2002, 12:27 PM Weld in new floorpans to get rid of that winter "air conditioning".
IndyCJ 10-01-2002, 12:38 PM Shiznit, where do I begin?
I'm boxing my CJ-6 frame frame next weekend, hanging the suspension, D44 front with ctm's, blah blah blah, Ford 9" rear, 35 spline, blah blah blah.
Basically, right now I have a frame and a garage full of parts to put together. I'm hoping to have the drivetrain done by Christmas, and setting the bobbed CJ8 body on it starting in January (whatever that can of worms opens I don't quite know at this time)!!!!
I'm shooting for April to get it all done, well, ok, at least done 'enough' to drive. :D
4Bangler 10-01-2002, 12:49 PM Mine will be down for the first winter ever, which sucks cuz the only challenging wheelin in Michigan is the lame trails with 4 feet of snow on them.
Anyway, by next spring the 4Bangler should have:
1) New cage tied into frame with seats and 5-points mounted to it.
2) New 63-65" wide F-250 HP Dana 44 front to replace existing Wagoneer LP 44
3) New 63-65" wide full floater 9" rear to replace existing Early Bronco 9"
4) New SOA front suspension with revised 3/4 elliptic, 52" springs and a few other tricks
5) New 4-link rear with 1/4 elliptic
6) New 37" MT/R's to replace still new 35" MT/R's
Kicker 10-01-2002, 01:15 PM I am trying to rush to beat winter...My Jeep is my primary winter vehicle (Cobra don't like snow).
I am getting my 383 assembled next week. Still aiting for a cam :( Swapping in the Th400 and NP205...Then if I have time before it snows, time to swap in the 44's, and do SOA. If not, I will have to get a driveshaft to fit my NP205 and Dana35. Waste of money, but need to be able to drive!!
Need to do my Herculiner.
Then if I have time, get back to learning how to do rear end setups adn rebuild auto trans's...
Whaley Enterprises 10-01-2002, 04:22 PM 1. rebuild j20..new motor big block maybe havent got that far yet any suggestions. nv4500 and n eithet atlas or d300 prolly the 300. This to be work truck and short distance tow rig
2. get school bus.smoke some good crack..instant long range tow monster..code named chesse wagon
3. steal vinces tj for a weekend..get a about a dozen sawzall blades.. and take off the stupid ass bullbar and cut the shit out of rust free sheet metal..umm thats good
4.if somehow spring never comes build a new competition buggy with all the goodies,,,
5.sell my superduty v10 2wd regualr cab...anybody wanna deal..
66CJdean 10-01-2002, 04:53 PM Tear the whole thing appart! I'm not kidding.
New motor/tranny/doubler t-case with a toy low range to a Land Rover t-case
Frame mods
Shave the front and rear axles
Chop the rocker pannels
Shackle reversal finally!
Paint it all up perdy:flipoff2:
chadl 10-01-2002, 05:21 PM After last winters front and rear axle swap and spring over, I'm thinking I'm going to take it a little easier this year. Still need to get new springs built, (or probably build my own from junkyard parts, may go waggy in the front, and stretch it out a little). After that I need to get a roll cage in (hopefully i can talk the wifey into a JD2 for christmas). And finally, call me :gay: but the interior needs some work, so hopefully after the cage gets finished, I'm going to have the seats recovered, buy or build a better consoel, and rewire all my half-a$$ accessories so I can have a CB that works for a whole trail ride, and interior lights again. Oh yeah TJ fairs, and hopefully new tires. Boy that list got long all of a sudden.
Chad
TPIJeep 10-01-2002, 05:29 PM I am going to build my HP 60 rear, still cannot decide to go with rear steer or not!
Going to get a close to a flat skid as possible with the help of the HP in the rear.
Coat my headers
Louver my inner fenders..
Build OBA tanks in the bumpers
Build a tire rack, or Ice chest rack and put the spare behind the seats.
And whatever else I can think up along the way!
beerisgood 10-01-2002, 06:51 PM put the engine tranny and transfer case in the cj-5 and get some new springs for my cj-7.

No way!!!!!! :D:flipoff2:
For me.....
Finally install the SM420 waiting in the garage
Finish detail work from the cage/fender/rocker project - lights, CB, speakers, etc...
Build a new interior rack
Most likely a bunch of maintenance like bushing replacement and whatnot.
That is.....unless I end up skiing all winter again. :D
Paul
cord318 10-01-2002, 07:24 PM Snow bashing. Missed most of summer due to my mods. Need to plan alot better
Jeepdude_Jay 10-01-2002, 07:47 PM Aluminum radiator.
Frame tie-ins for cage.
open up rear fenders.
rear seat for the kids.
Rock lights.
Fix fuel tank leak.
Better spare tire mount.
Wax.
Cheepin 10-01-2002, 08:31 PM Right now the goal is to have the Jeep running and have way ready to wheel for a Christmas snow run.Still to do,finish front shackle hangers and Dshaft.Start stretching rear and build new mounts for rear springs then Dshaft.Finish wiring, get new radiator and clutch linkage(hydro). After it can move on its own finish full cage. Then get a top for it.Too much to do and not enough time to do it.
My problem now is I don't have garage and it is getting dark earlier and earlier!:( So when I get home from work at around 5:30 I don't have much time to get anything done.
Chrisjeep7 10-01-2002, 08:33 PM well after only having the dana 44 front in for a year i am swaping it out....and most of the drive train
1 dana 60 front
2 14 bolt rear disc b's
3 have jess whip me up some shafts (junkyard shaft repair is getting old)
4. get propane running
5 repaint cowl
6 rock stomper beadlocks
7 works on rust spots
8 more cage tie in's
9 all the little mickey mouse shit that goes with the mods
O and no garage!
Po' riggity 10-01-2002, 08:39 PM Well my plans kinda look like this:
Wheel :D In the desert.
And here are my plans as far as the jeep goes,
3.5" waggy springs, extend front and rear shock mounts
shackle reversal, buggy springs for the front.
Revolvers for the rear.
put 297x shafts in the D30, that Ive had laying around.
install rock lock to get rid of that vaccum actuation.
And maybe, if there is time and $$, all pro offroad rock crawler hood, and cutting the rear fenders, to fit 37" MTR's.
Scott
BrettM 10-01-2002, 09:05 PM Partial exo and flatbed the MJ. Swap Toy 8" and move up to 35s. Swap the Puegoet (hopefully with a granny tranny) even though it runs great at nearly 200k.
tators 10-02-2002, 04:13 AM Remove 258 TBI and install 350 TBI
with as little down time as possible.....
Seem to do alot of wheeling in the Fall & Winter
Finish the new shop, then start on the Willys. I need a adaptor to the 300, gears and 3rd for the rear, get 38 SX's and rims, and lots of little crap, like fuel cell, orbital, shocks, paint, bend the cage, wiring, heims..etc. Pretty much build the whole thing. Also gotta build the extra parts I have around to make a HP 44 front to sell off, and also sell my Scout D300 to offset some of the Willys $$$ All of this before a Spring run to Montrose:eek:
ChadLloyd 10-02-2002, 08:53 AM Detroit locker, at least in the front, so I can steer this fawker!
Cutting brakes. I have line locks I want to put in the rear wheels. I have 2, I'm not sure at this point if I'm going to use 1 or 2. I actually plumbed 1 in when doing the 14 bolt swap, just have to hook it up now.
Roll Cage. I think a roll cage would be a very good idea at this point.
Fender Flares: I want it to be legal enough to drive to the trail, so I need flares. At the same time, I really like not having flares on rocky trails. So I am going to try to rig up something with easily removable flares.
Painting the frame. Frame is starting to get a lot of surface rust on it. Question is, how do I paint a frame without a garage?
E Brakes: gotta finally hook up the stock e brakes. I think I am going to do one like Chris Waterman's pinion brake. Solves a lot of problems.
Cooling. On a hot day she overheats like mad. I think a stock sized 3 core radiator will do the trick, because I don't think the bottom 1/3 of my stock rad is actually passing an air.
Ram Assist steering.
Jaffer 10-02-2002, 09:06 AM I started a web page on this winter's TJ Crawler Project (http://www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/TJCrawler/TJCrawler.htm)
TJBob 10-02-2002, 09:47 AM Rebuild & assemble 302, NP435 & eb dana 20 (possibly with 203 low range box) for final assembly in the TJ.
I've got the tranny and tc, need an engine and parts.
Down time will be minimal.
Bob
tuckster 10-02-2002, 11:37 AM if I don't hurry up these plans will be running into next spring easy...
1. Discs on 14 bolt, box frame, inboarded springs
2. Relocate gas tank? Fuel cell... still undecided
3. D-shafts (Jess)
4. full hydro shiz
5. bumpers, cage, skids
6. half doors
7. OBA
8. Rob a bank so I can get wheels and tires when I'm done
9. check the lug nut torque on the spare tire
10. change the blinker fluid :D :D
indulf 10-02-2002, 01:11 PM around here, the winter is the best time of year to scour the junkyards. ill be spending all my time looking for that pot of gold (hp 60) and some other stuff in the local yards :)
indulf
oldjeep 10-03-2002, 06:56 AM Finish the commando frame I have, cut the cj2 body in half and swap the whole jeep onto the new frame.
Hey Lame, how much you want for that scout 300?
JohnnyJ 10-03-2002, 08:41 AM first I need to swap out the trans in my wag so that it move out of the garage on its own power.
then i'll probably do the re la kit on my tj and go up to 4.56s and rear detroit locker and swap the 35 mtrs off my waggy onto the tj and put the swampers on the wag. pretty lame but it's my DD and I don't want to have it down for a month or two while we fab up something custom. the b.o.b. stuff should be a good project for the week that I have off between xmas and new year. maybe in a couple of years i'll rearrange it, but for now my custom work is on other people's stuff.
the big project looks to be helping do a 3-link on the front end of my friend's scrambler to go with the rear 4-link we did this summer.
the old coleman heater ought to be busy this year...

Probabally a good idea, I wouldn't pay more than a $200 for one. $300 if it included the rest of the scout:D

I know, you are a cheap bastard among cheap bastards:flipoff2: I had to pay $100 for the whole scout
:D
PtrBilt 10-03-2002, 12:39 PM My plans are to finish plumbing air lines in the garage and add heat. Then:
Build a new cage and frame tie in
Get the rebuilt motor running
Finish the electrical stuff
nevadayj 10-03-2002, 02:17 PM Well, with a few runs finally on the YJ as equipped, the changes to it this winter are as follows:
1. Some sort of motor swap. Thinking maybe a 4.3/4L60 pkg, or rebuild my 4.2 with a 4.0 head and TBI. Big decision, even bigger project!
2. Finally finish my cage tie in to the frame and install the seats that have been in the garage since July.
3. Custom flat dash panel with the Autometers that have been on the bench since August. Also, custom center console for the ARB non-electric switches I don't have yet.
4. Some minor trimming all around and a quick paint job.
If all goes well, we'll be ready for the first CalRocs event this Spring!
Good luck to everyone else on their projects!
Kilby 10-04-2002, 10:02 AM 1) Acquire LOCKERS & 4.88's w/ 35's when my little tires finally wear out.
2) I've already ordered some angle iron to build some rocker guards (that's more of a Fall project).
3)Ride snowboard in Snowshoe, WV :D
Oh, yeah...
4) Build some heim'd control arms.
Of course, I might not have CASH for any of this, so we'll see what actually gets done next spring!!
H8monday 10-05-2002, 06:47 PM I plan to swap in a HP60 in the front, with a bunch of trick CTM parts that I will be testing for, Jack.
Go to full hydro steering, in place of the Hydro assist.
Shave the ring gear on the 14 bolt and do the cutaway bottom trimming and re weld.
4 link the rear suspension, with coil overs, and remove the frame rails from about midway back.
Dove tail the rear quarters.
redesign the roll cage and cockpit tubing, and frame tie ins
Simplify electrical system.
Beef up brake calipers and master
add front brake locks
Trim away as much uneeded weight as I can find.
JEEP_TJ_FREAK 10-06-2002, 01:14 PM I plan to fawking WHEEL! :flipoff2:
My chit has been broken for 2 months, if I have a winter project I'll be damned if it takes my rig down.
MoabZJ 10-06-2002, 10:41 PM Strecth WB to fit 37's on 4" lift, HP44 front w/ selectable locker of some sort, d60 rear w/ spool, rear coilovers, bob the rear as much as possible, finish the front tube fenders/exocage/bumper, build the dash in some way, redo the front of the cage, paint it, .....
Need a few more jobs.
Jakesteramalamajama 10-07-2002, 07:21 AM NEW HEATER FAN!!!
(Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr)
</chattering teeth>
rkcrawl 10-07-2002, 09:23 AM Sell my house and move to Tennessee. :D

Relocate fuel tank into tub/and or replace with fuel cell.
Relocate OBA tank to under tub.
Build a new anti-wrap bar and mount.
Install rear turning brakes.
Strip out unnecessary stuff (like heater ducts, motor etc.)
Weezer 10-07-2002, 11:37 AM finish the front 44
Ditch the old buick 198 with 3 zillion miles on it and slap in the new buick 225 that only has 2 zillion miles on it.
Also the other misc things that need work, I could think of 50 off hand but I wont list them.
lastly, go play in the snow
sceep 10-08-2002, 06:46 AM 318/auto swap into my cj-7, along with a pair of locked and loaded 60's, 44044's & 38+'s :D:D Its gonna be a wrench fest winter.. im so glad we finally got the heater installed in the shop.
JeepTJ1062 10-08-2002, 01:07 PM Finish puttin my CJ back together and finally wheel it. Decide if I wanna sell it to do a complete buildup of my TJ. Swap in a D44 or 8.8 in my TJ to get rid of the damned D35. Maybe redesign the suspension on the CJ to a triangulated 4 link. Decide about moving to Murfreesboro or stay in Memphis.
G.C. Bandit 10-08-2002, 09:01 PM Man were to start. Bust out the tube bender and start going crazy with it. Put in the 350 TBI along with tranny and tcase. Get rid of cross over and go full hydro. New springs for the front and a shackle reversal. Not to mention by a tow rig and trailer.:D
I want to lower my jeep....
Simple Man 10-09-2002, 08:03 AM I'm cleaning up the CJ5 to sell it.
I'll put the money in to my CJ2A witch needs: cage, e-brakes, seats, shocks/mounts, etc.
The SM420 attached to the Dana 18 and Chevy bell housing sitting on the floor will have to wait for a while. No 4.3 engine yet.
The rig has been down for seven years and it's too close to take apart and swap tranies. The Buick 231 V6, T90, D18 is old school but will get me down the road.
The spring over is done and fits the 33x9.5 mud terrains very nice.
RCKRATZ 10-09-2002, 02:35 PM Atlas is going in, which means I need to extend the wheelbase 6" or so.
New Drivelines

and ten tons of other little things.. :D
Rockcrusher 10-13-2002, 09:17 PM Desert wheelin - Install new axles - Desert wheelin - Maybe get a Klune - Desert wheelin - Maybe paint the POS - Desert wheelin. If I got any time left, I may even do some desert wheelin.
Geesh 10-14-2002, 03:07 PM The list is long, as it has yet to run, but:
- finish making the frame (custom 2.5x4.0, .125 wall)
- place the four waggy springs under the new frame (means shakles)
- finish the Waggy 44 rear (FS cheb disks/rotors, 4.88's, Detroit, maybe ARB)
- do the same for the matching front 44
