: Pseudo Review - Osprey Tactical Riflescope
Jam Master Jay 12-24-2009, 07:10 AM I was just loaned a scope to see if I can make it work on my AR-15. It is an Osprey International "Tactical Riflescope (30mm Body)". It's 4-16x50, Illuminated (Red & Green), Mildot. Just looking at it right now it appears to be a very nice scope. The glass is clear and the adjustments all seem to work great. Supposedly cost $200.
Now for the reason why I have it:
A coworker/shooting buddy of mine bought it for his S&W .22 AR but he couldn't get it sighted-in. He said he ran out of adjustment dialing it to the left. He's a very competent shooter so I know it wasn't operator error. He offered it to me to try out on my new AR-15. I'm hoping I can make it work and extend the loan through March when I'm going pig hunting.
I plan to mount it tonight and take it out sometime within the next month to attempt to sight in, at least a rough sight-in at 50 yds, to see if it'll work on my gun. I'll post back here with my comments and impressions.

How much was that collapsible stock? About three bucks at Toys R Us? :flipoff2:
Jam Master Jay 12-24-2009, 08:40 AM So far I'm happy with the upper. I have no complaints.
The stock is a DPMS. It's the same price as any regular collapsable stock. I couldn't justify buying a magpul or anything like that. But that's the beauty of an AR, I can change it out to anything I want later on.

NEWMANS OWN 12-24-2009, 08:56 AM Oh yea interested in scope nice for sub $200!
FlexCJ5 12-24-2009, 09:08 AM I just discovered these scopes at the gun show last week. I bought a very nice holo/red dot sight from Craig, their local rep. He has great dealer pricing too.
The other scopes seemed very nice, clear and priced well below the competition. Apparently they have a "no questions asked" lifetime warranty so if yours won't zero properly I'd call Osprey and see what they will do.
aloharover 12-24-2009, 09:24 AM I have had very bad luck with inexpensive scopes over 9x.
When you crank up the power on them you eye has to be perfect or else the sides of the scope darken.
The Nikons, Luepolds, NightForce, etc do not exhibit this tendency.
I really have been amazed when comparing these scopes with something of similar power but in the 1-300$ range.

agreed, I have never seen a scope that was cheap compare to a nice scope. They might look nice and all, and the warranty is nice, howere i believe simmons has the same warranty. It doesnt do you any good when the scope looses zero and costs you an animal or your life.

Jam Master Jay 01-10-2010, 03:31 PM Well, I shot my AR with the scope on it today. It shot great. At 100 yds and fully zoomed-in I had no trouble seeing the target. The parallax adjustment worked well and got it focused in easily from 25 yds out to 100+ yds. The windage and elevation worked well with easily discernible clicks (it is marked also). I zeroed the caps, they lock in with 3 set screws on each knob. It was late afternoon, winter light so it wasn't extremely bright out but the scope was plenty bright. My only complaint was that the knob for the brightness/color adjustment was very stiff. I attribute some of that to the 32* temp at the range, though.
I'm pleased with it, enough so that I bought it from the guy who loaned it to me. I'm planning to take it hog hunting in March, I'll post some additional impressions after that trip.
4runner 01-10-2010, 04:01 PM any idea why he couldn't get it adjusted? bad/poor mount?
Jam Master Jay 01-10-2010, 04:53 PM any idea why he couldn't get it adjusted? bad/poor mount?
Yeah, I think the windage adjustment is backwards or he was just turning it the wrong direction and not looking at the markings. This is my first "tactical" scope so I'm new to being able to adjust the knobs rather than setting and forgetting.
He had mounted it on a S&W M&P .22 which he had out today with a different scope and it worked fine.
Jam Master Jay 04-09-2010, 02:23 PM I'm posting back up with some additional comments on this scope. I've taken it on several outings and I still love it. I shot 4 hogs with it and it was right on the money, 1 shot kills. I'm also shooting 10" plate every shot at 300 yds with it and crappy surplus ammo.
I've dragged it through at least 15 miles of brush on hog and coyote hunts and it's still as tight and zeroed as it was when I first put it on.
I'm very pleased with my purchase.
