Found a 40 in a guys back yard. It was originally a soft top but he has put a hardtop on it. He still has the soft doors and also the hardtop doors. The only rust that I can find is under the rear doors and the driver's side rear quarter(patched with metal on the back and then bondo?). Has the original 3 speeed and F motor that supposedly runs. Looks to be desert khaki or or dune beige originally. Now has a coat of brown and then a coat of silver paint that is very bad. Body is straight except for one fender that might be workable. Front split seats are gone with buckets bolted to the original frame. He wants $1500. Good project? Worth it or not????????

And it runs?? Have you driven it? That would be the deciding factor there.

$1500 for a fairly original running cruiser with little rust up here is unheard of. :D

I stopped and looked one last week that had no motor and the interior was stripped (no dash, switches...nothing) and the guy wanted $1200 for it. HA! :flipoff2: thanks but no thanks....

Going to see it tonight and to try to get it to run. Will try and talk him down. Probably not a good idea to pull up to his place with the car hauler hooked up to the back of my truck. Would kinda give my intentions away.

BOUGHT IT!!! $1100. Seller pulled the plugs and put in some Marvel Mystery Oillast night. Disconnected the gas line, put a battery in it, turned it over a while, good compression, ran a hot wire to the coil(seller lost key), turned it over, and it fired after about one crank. Will pick it up tommorow and get some pics. I will have to rebuild the hardtop. Should I have the gas tank cleaned and sealed? It hasn't ran for at least 6 yrs? Change oil and filter? Glad to join the ranks of the 40's owners. Maybe a 60 or an 80 next.

Got it home and off the trailer(not fun by yourself). My daughter (6yrs old) helped me pull the front seats and the gas tank. I was afraid that there would be alot of hidden rust under the tank, but just found a snall amount. Knocked it off with a wire brush wheel and will coat with POR 15 when I can. I'll post a pic of the front seats soon. They are buckets, but mount to the original brackets perfectly. I thought that it would have had the split bench seat. The drivers side tilts up for storage under the seat. No rust in there either. Could these be the original seats? The passenger side base comes all the way over to the right side of the drivers seat. Post pics as soon as I get the chance. It is a mid year 72.

That is the same excact setup my 72 had so I would say its original, but I am no expert .
