Just thought this was funny...

In the last month a BFG sponcered rig won the Goodyear sponcered rock crawling series AND a Goodyear sponcered rig won the BFG sponcered rock crawling series.

That's pretty funny considering the laughs a certain BFG rep was having about BFG being top dog in a GoodYear series. I'm sure he quit laughing :D

ya i got some laughs from that when i saw walker win the series. especially after talking to the bfg rep at rcaa and i asked him how good it felt to beat goodyear in their own series. he said it had been a blast sneeking into the dance and stealing the girl. in the end i think bfg really is the one to come out smelling like a rose.

maybe next year we will see interco kick every bodys ass. :D

ok ok Chris lets get this correct......The BFGs rock and everybody knows it.
Just ask your boss John...whats on his rig!!! Dont try and get so happy just cause Mike didnt drive in Victorville. We all know that is the reason why Mike didnt win the series!!!! Goodyear is getting scared because they are seeing
not only Mike but Tracy, Don, Shupe, and they are getting many more guys to switch. At least BFG is offering the DRAG compound for there competers..... its something new!!

But good job this weekend!! :D

And neither one of them will ever win a mud race sponsored by anyone unless they get serious about giving us a TRUE mud tire ;)

So why don't BFG and Goodyear offer a sticky drag racing compund to those of us poor souls that are just part of the public and not big dogs?

A year ago some ARCA competitors had some of the MT Claws with the sticky drag compound they were testing. I was told that MT sort of discontinued this track. Anyone know why?

Also, I heard rumors over a year ago that Interco was looking at producing some sticky swampers. Anyone got any info about this?

What about recapping tires with sticy drag compound? Can anyone recap a 38.5 swamper?

I've been asking a lot of competetors what their tires, the guys running BFG krawlers say they kick a$$ in the rocks, but swamper is better all around.

I think its great that Goodyear and BFG won the competion's events that the other was sponsering, so which is better???

BFG had mentioned that the softer componds would generate too much heat on a typical street truck application and would not pass their test standards. Besides that, they'd be cooked awfully fast. Softies will most likely be available to comp rigs only and possibly only through sponsorship.

They do rock though! In a comp, all else being equal, they bite where the the blimp tires are buzzing. I'm talking as much apples and apples as i can- well respected consistent driver/teams on the same obstacles, running consecutively.

And the sidewalls are tough!

its about time BFG started making some tougher sidewalls. ive seen more cut bfg sidewalls than 3+ signature lines on JU.

I'm guessing that they can't sell the softies as a non DOT approved tire because some idiot would run them on the highway at 90 mph, they would build up too much heat, separate and blow out, and the idiot would have a fatal accident and then the moron's relatives would sue BFG.

Is that the reason they aren't going to produce softies for the general hardcore trail rig only market?

that and that even if said moron did not kill himself. said moron would most likley call an complain when his sticky tires wore out in less than 5k miles of street use.

Let's ban morons and get some sticky tires for the "real " off roaders not the street posers.

The crawler dudes need to get with the circle track dudes and discuss "tire softening." I don't know for sure, but if the lefthanders can take a 64+ durometer Hoosier or Goodyear down to 46-, I would imagine they could do it to a Krawler or an MT/R. I know there's a dude up in the Dells that does it for like $5/27x10R15.

From discussions with the BFG rep.
BFG is having problems with keeping up with demand on their mainstream tire lines. They are filling only 80% of orders from vendors. They need another factory to fill the void in just their mainstream tire lines.
Now the tire business is not a very profitable business, only a 1-2% profit margin. Try getting a group of investors to build a billion dollar factory on a 1% return. Not going to happen.
So that brings us to the rock crawling tires. A small niche market, with a low profit. Which market is BFG going to fullfill, the street tire market that keeps the company going, or a small niche market tire?
The Krawler tires will come, it is going to be a while though.

Not quite right......

BFG was at CalROCS in a vendor/competitor support capacity . They were not offical sponsors of our series. CalROCS would like to thank them for bring their support to our sport.

We really liked the communication set up, with regards to real time scoring, this is something we'll expand on next season.

lol.. yha i had posted a couple times about useing vht or track bite etc on tires.. it works.. plane and simple..

and yha, i imagine a " drag " compound on a street rig would wear REAL ffast.. i used to go thru a set of dot slicks in about 2k miles.. and those wernt even the realy soft ones..

A friend of mine who races roundy-rounds has used stuff called "Hot Lap", and also had good results SOAKING the tire in WD-40...

Krawlers will be available real soon- definately by first of the year last I heard. They're still a good tire, even the less sticky ones.

How do they treat tires?
How long does an application last?

The dudes that do it keep it pretty secret. My guess as to why they do that is because it's so simple, any yahoo could do it once they figure it out. As far as I know, they just dip the entire tire into a tank of "something" for a certain length of time. The longer it's in the tank, the softer it gets.

I've also heard of racers injecting "something" in through the valve stem, letting it role around in there for a few laps, and then draining it out ... supposedly softens the tire from the inside out. That mehod won't get the tire as soft as "the dip," but even a 5 durometer difference can mean 0.1s/lap at some tracks.

As for longevity; I dunno'. As I originally said, I'm only familiar with it as it pertains to the circle track scene. The Hoosiers and Goodyears we run are only good for about 200-300 laps anyways.

There could very well be some secrets to getting them really soft. On the other hand, any performance catalog will have tire softener in it. Or, check with any speed shop that has a dirt-track nearby.

I have not done it, but been around it. They make shallow trays with two rollers, fill the tray with a few gallons of your vavorite brand of chemical, put the tires on the rollers, switch on, the tires spin through the bath and baste your tires. the rest is in experience as far as how long and favorite brand.

Thats a lot of laps, More likely they are made to go 80 laps, or around 100-200 miles

Ah, I did leave out one important detail didn't I. The tracks we race at range anywhere from 1/4mi to 1/2mi. So yeah, our tire window is about 100-150 miles. Of course that all changes with weather, left side versus right side, front versus rear, flat track versus banked, and of course wether a particular track allows tire softening.
