1. best place to watch the race
2. should I get 4wd rental car
3. time of race, length
thanks
Heres some basics...the majority of people camp on the lakebed (Means Dry Lake), vendors area is also set up here. Buy yourself a map of the race course in the vendors area.
IMO, the best place to see action is on one of the rock trails, you may or may not need 4wd depending on which trail head you go to. From most trail heads you will have to hike in. I went to several locations during the race and i'll probably do the same for 2010.
Plan on LCQ being an all day event this year, the big race will be all day and into the night from what i've been reading.
You can also search this forum for maps of the Hammer trails with GPS cords.

1. I'm sure there will be multiple places to watch the race. Depends what kind of racing you want to see (desert, rocks?). Since the course hasn't been released no one can tell you for sure. I expect that the plaque on Sledge will be a popular spot again..
2. Maybe not absolutely necessary, but it wouldn't hurt.
3. Don't thing these have been released yet, but I've seen Jeff/Dave say on here that it's around 13x miles and that the late finishers will go into the night. I'd expect a 7-8am start time maybe.
Jeff Knoll 12-27-2009, 09:34 AM Kinda taking a break for the holidays from KOH. But not a 100% break.:flipoff2:
There are two places that you can watch the race from a long hike, or drive a 4x4 SUV rental car. Hike a little farther and you can get to a bunch of places, but you should be a pretty fit person if you want to hike that far.
I can not tell you the best place to watch as we keep the course map a secret until the week of the race.
Best bet, 4x4 rental, get the damage waiver.:D
135 +- miles this year.
Race starts early, and ends late. Depending on what you like to watch, there is something for everyone. I am not big on the crowds like we saw at Sledge last year, so My advice is buy the program, which has the map early in the week. Go explore the areas farther out and see the race from a lawn chair with a cooler of your favorite beverage. You can watch the race multiple times as the lay out allows you to move and stay in front of the race without speeding around the desert.
Watch the start, check out the vendor area, then see them come into main pit to watch the pit stop action. Then head out to your pre scouted location. head back to camp get some lunch, and then hit your next scouted place, and finally get to the finish for the leaders and finish line party.
Just please pack it in pack it out. Bring all your trash out with you, and participate in the KOH ECO Challenge.
Race is pretty non buggy friendly. I am pretty sure you can see a lot with a 2 wheel drive truck. Just not a Civic.
mtfit 12-27-2009, 04:23 PM thanks, also can anyone reccommend places to stay around the "lakebed" nearest town (victorville) etc. I will driving in from LV.
Jeff Knoll 12-27-2009, 04:38 PM Lucurne and Landers are close, but I would go to Yucca Valley. check the Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce for all the Phone numbers.
Broke That 01-04-2010, 07:36 AM Not big on the crowds at Sledge huh?
I'm not sure I would understand why.......was it the trash left behind?
Jeepndel 01-05-2010, 06:29 PM And don't forget to stop by Hammertown and the big tent to see the Land Use folks all hunkered up supporting KOH, Friends of Johnson Valley and a lot of the land use orgs.
I made up a name (in fun) for this land use effort at KOH -- Hammers Access and Landuse Team (HALT - as in halt the gates; halt the closures; and halt this bs of messing with our trails and leave us alone). :)

I'm fairly certain that no trash got past the KOH clean up crews, but it is a shame that people would leave a mess at such an amazing place.
No I just dont like the Zoo Road mentality. I'm more into chilling out in the desert with my freinds and enjoying the view as a few fast race cars go blasting by.
If I could just watch the race, I know every spot I would watch from. Most will never see the views I have had the time to enjoy while doing recon on this brutal race course this year.
I made one of my favorite views a check point. Check point one to be exact. Its a heck of a drive, but its a pretty damn good view 360 degrees.
So I guess what I am saying is there are far better places to watch this race then Sledgehammer. I would not watch it there. TV or DVD coverage will see those spots for sure, but its unlikely they will see the really cool spots out in the middle of nowhere.:)

Nice clue:p
Jeff Knoll 01-06-2010, 09:30 PM Good luck with that. Most people have not been there. I will say its awesome!
lankster29 01-07-2010, 06:36 PM If i bring my rig out early in the week can I wheel? or are all the trails closed all week? Is it worth it to bring my rig or is it a total zoo on the trails? Thanks and looking forward to seeing KOH!

Trails are open until races start, but the popular ones can be a bit busy, read parking lot.:D
The less popular trails or long way out trails are the best bet. I would bring your rig if for nothing else transportation.

I wouldnt even consider leaving my rig at home. Like Jeff said the popular trails can get real busy but if you are making a long haul out here bring your rig and go explore some of the other trails. Last year we ran lower and upper Big Johnson and Boulder dash on Saturday afternoon and only had a couple of rigs in front of us. When we got to the top of lower Big Johnson a large group was at the bottom, so it just depends when you hit a trail on how busy it is.

You still have to walk inside to pay in Yucca? Wow, backwoods! :flipoff2:
ATM at the pump and no one will ever see what kind of containers you are using.

maxyedor 01-15-2010, 04:39 AM Last year I watched from all over the place, some spots were crowded, some were much better spots and empty, figure out what obstacles you want to see people race on and go there. For those of us who can go to the Hammers any time we feel like it, avoiding the crowds, even if it means you're not at as cool of a spot is choice, but if this is your first and maybe only trip to the Hammers, don't miss out on a cool trail because you're afraid of a crowd.
4wd is nice, not required, but if you can get at least a 4x4 Explorer or something like that I would, and get the damage waiver. You could easily get within walking distance of Jack and Sledge in a Camry, the lower end of Wrecking Ball would be tough to get close to, just due to tire size.
I wouldn't stay in a hotel, just too far a drive in the morning and at night. Spend what you would have spent on a hotel on some cheap camping supplies at Wal-Mart and party, or sleep on the lakebed. Spectating at the race is only half the fun, hanging out and meeting people and talking to people after the race is the other half.
ATM at the pump and no one will ever see what kind of containers you are using.
You really think an average pump jockey at the 76 station knows what a CARB compliant can is? Put the cans on the ground, swipe your card, fill them up, buy an Icee and get on with your day.
barney1 01-26-2010, 08:19 PM anybody know what frequency are the race radios using so we can listen in with scanners
