what case do you have? with what i assume is a sm465.

the adaptor isnt the expensive part of the 700r4 swaps, the shorter outputshaft is.

a redrilled np203 that was behind a th350 will work with a 700r4 with the factory 700r4 208/241 adaptor.

The sm465 output shaft is a 10 spline, and the 700r4 has a 27 spline. The only thing that will work is a np208 from a 700r4 or you can get a np205 from a th350, but you have to run a spacer cause the 700 has a longer tailshaft.

78 t case should be a 203 or 205 if it was a 1 ton ... to adapt it to the 700r4 u need a shorter output shaft, its only like 80 bucks but....that requires major trans surgery to swap it out... i would just put a np208 behind the 700r4 bolts right up and has lower low range then 203 or 205 and would hold up just fine in your sammi

Yep, 208 all the way. There's no need for that big nasty 205. Especially in a V6 Sammy. The 208 has everything going for it over the 205 except being chain driven. Seeing as how you're not pushing anywhere near high torque levels, it will live just fine under the Sammy. Plus, like previously stated, it has a lower low range. It's also WAY lighter than the 205 and WAY easier to shift. I'd look for one with a fixed rear yoke out of a Dodge though. I think they were used with fixed rear yokes in something else too, but I can't remember. Someone else will chime in, I'm sure.

NP 208 is an all aluminum case and has a round tag on the back that will identify it as a 208. They came in GM solid axle 4x4's from 1981 to 1987. (Passenger side drop.)
It's low range is 2.62 to 1 as opposed to the 203 (2to1) or the 205 (1.96 to 1).

to save some length you can get the ass off a dodge 208 and pu tit on the chevy and you will save about 4-5" and get a fixed yoke to boot.

did the same thing in my 93 s10. just get a np208 out of a 700r4... you can probably find about 28 of them in any junkyard or on craigslist dirt cheep, they came in most of the 80s k5 blazers and pick up trucks. just swipe the adapter off that 700r4. too. the adapter will bolt right up and the np208 will bolt right up. very easy swap. only issue i have is since mine is a 93 it doesnt have the VSS hooked up but never really cared to fix it

pass side drop np 241 is almost identical to np 208... if u can find it id use it but 300 bucks sounds kinda high .... keep looking for a cheap 208....
