: Granny Tranny for 4.0???

I have searched all over PBB, Google, Novak and AA and I can't find any 4 speed tranny with a granny low first that will bolt up to a 4.0L with or without an adapter. Does such a thing exist (besides a NV4500, too much $$) ??

This thread: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13199&highlight=granny+4.0 was slightly informative, but not really. Also, this is for an MJ which does not have the possibility of a body lift. Is there any way to make one of the granny trannys fit without major reshaping of the tunnel?

Thanks guys

What about a T18? NP435?

wouldn't both need an adapter? I couldn't find any adapters for these to mate with a 4.0... Also, what about a T98?

 Maybe because there's an OEM BH that does the trick!

If you don;t want to hack the floor for the granny tranny give up now. I ran a SM564 in my XJ and now run one in my MJ. Substantial cutting is needed to get it all to fit righ and be easy to install. If you like to fight yourself you can get away with a small hole but it is a PITA to get the case on, trans out etc w/o some top acces. I just cut a big hole and made a cover for it. To get a decent hieght on it you should also cut the heater box and dash to make it really fit. Also requires a bendy shifter. If you want I can post some pics of my setup.

I run a SBC so adapter questions are wasted on me. I would guess Novak, AA or some one make the stuff to hook one of those trannies to a 4.0, I mean they hook them all to a 258 right?

t98 is the predescessor to the t18

the t18 will work. you'll need a t150 bellhousing. this has been discussed before. call AA, they have info on this swap that will help you

A T18 or NP435 will work with a T150/T176 CJ bellhousing. Novak can modify this bellhousing to work with the 4.0's crank position sensor.

go back to novacs and read some more... You can bolt on any ford wode patteren tranny using the stock AMC bell housing that was used with a T-176 tranny...

Also you can drill out any AMC bell houseing to gain the chevy tranny pattern

Old man Novac had all this info posted up before he died... havent been to the site in awhile but its out there..

Is there any problem with a t-18 out of a '76 F250? There's one on the for sale board... he wants $125, which seems pretty cheap, what do these things run?

It has to be a bellhousing that has the T-5/ SR 5 bolt pattern. The 76-79 t150 BH won't work, it doesnt have any material to drill for 2 of the bolts.

Why not just find a J-truck granny low T18? I curently have a jeep cj5 that came stock with a T18. I swapped in granny low gears out of a ford trans and am currently looking at swapping in a stroked 4.0. Basicly the same problem. All the info I have says that 258s and 4.0s share the same bellhousing bolt pattern. Just go and find a J-truck with a granny trans and a 258. Make sure you get the bellhousing with the trans though as they used 5 or so different input shaft lengths. Hope that helps.

I don;t have any pics as good as I thought I did of the hole but here is what I got:

I think mine may actually run a little farther back then one behind a 4.0 but I am not sure. In this one the towel is over the shift tower. The trans will have to come up about 5-6" before it is in it's final location. The big hole in the rear is the origional hole in the floor of the MJ.

This is with it in place, the shift boot makes it hard to see. The shifter is actually up into the dash here. I cut a bit out of the heater box and re sealed it (duct tape is your friend) and then had to trim the valence panel to get the shifter to move in and out easy. I left it so the ash tray slides in and it looks like it is not cut up. You can see in the hole how much easier the big hole makes it to get to my adapter, t-case bolts. shifters, etc.....

Hope these help

Yup - NP435 will bolt up using a T150 or T176 b/h. All you need to do is have the b/h machined for the crank position sensor.
