: Radiator Clearance Problems with a Early Bronco 5.0 Swap

I bought a 1970 Bronco with a almost finished engine swap (not the greatest idea). All that was left was to mount the radiator and hoses (so I thought). The 5.0 is from a 92 mustang. When I mounted the stock Bronco radiator, I found that there was only 2 inches between the water pump pully and the radiator. Is this a common problem with late model mustang engine bronco swaps? I cant even find an electric fan that will fit between the two. I could run multiple pusher fans, or I could convert the serpintine belt system back to v-belts (I think). Any suggestions would be appreciated. I haven't been able to find any one else on the net with this problem.

Thanks,
Ian

Go get a svo short shaft water pump kit for the 5.0 its like $150 for it vs 150 each for the timing cover and water pump. Or find you a 94-95 mustang and yank the timing cover, water pump, brackets, and pulleys. Thats the easiest way to gain a extra inch or more of clearance. I think its 1 1/4" more clearance to be exact.

Is it using a clutch fan? If so, put a regular one on it. I put a regular flex fan on it with a spacer to clear the belts. Then I modified my radiator mounting. You know how the brackets mount to the back of the core support? I drilled out the spot-welds, ground out the lip on the top of the core support and welded the hoops for the brackets to go into. It gave me an extra 1/2 and inch or so. Don't go to the v-belts, they suck.

I moved the radiator forward.

Thanks for all your advice. Is this a stupid idea? I was thinking of mounting 2 10 inch pusher fans from summit on the front of the radiator (they'll fit), and one 12 inch puller on the back of the radiator off center so that in would clear the water pump pully. Think they'll move enough air for proper cooling? I would love to move the radiator forward, but don't have the skills or equipment.

Thanks again,
Ian

Ian, where do you live? I'm sure somebody would be willing to give you a hand. You don't want to go with all of those fans. Not only would it be expensive. Not only would it be loud. But it would put a huge drain on your charging system and you'd likely have to spend more money on a bigger altenator as well.

Jack,
I live in Honolulu Hawaii. I am seriously considering just reverting back to the v-belt system. Is this really a bad idea?
Thanks,
Ian

BC Broncos (http://www.bcbroncos.com) sells a radiator guard that reduces the likelyhood of the fan chewing up the cores. Not sure what you use your truck for, but it might be an option.

If you don't want to move anything then just go with the two 10" fans my brother has the same engine in a ranger with a CJ radiator and it cools with just those two fans, and skip the third. I would do that before I went back to the v-belt system. Just my 2 cents.

I actually got 2 12" fans...... but I really havn't needed the second fan..... that CJ radiator keeps it pretty cool..... and I don't have room for a puller or a mechanical in my set up (in my sig)
