: Hub Interchangeability?

This one is for a buddy of mine with limited computer access, he called me about this but my technical knowledge of FJ40 is primitive at best:

Truck is an 11/78 FJ40; while wheeling this past weekend, he grenaded a manual hub (old Warn), shearing some of the bolts on the hub assembly as well. He's got an FJ60 axle in the barn and wanted to know if he could use the Aisin hubs off of it. I told him I wasn't sure, I know there are some issues with inner axle and birfield length but wasn't sure what the real story was. What says the group? What are his other options? New warns? Superwinch? I told him I have a set of fine-spline hub flanges that he could have in a pinch (emergency set on the Princess), but if he can run those Aisins, even better...

Birfs on the 78 axle are too long for the FJ60 Aisins. If I was him, I would swap the FJ60 birfs and hubs onto the 78 axle. He will have to grind the housing a tad, but will get the stronger mini/60 series birfs and almost indestructable Aisins in return.

Thanks, hermano, I'll pass that info on. I figured YOU'd know! :)

If he doesn't feel like changing the birfs, cheapest hubs I found were Mile Marker units in the JC Whitney catalogue. They are basically similar to Warns. I hammered them at Ossippee (took a chunk out of one same place I cut the front tire) and they keep going. Cost me $70 delivered.

Henry I'll bet someone in LSC has some extra Warns. Almost all of the guys have switched over to Asins, post it on the LSC list.
I keep a set of new Warns at the shop. PM me I'll cost a set out for ya.
I completely agree with rustycruiser though about swapping it over, I would swap the knuckle housing also if I had them, get all the good stuff!

Thanks, Butch, I'll pass the info on. He said he wanted to swap everything out too, knuckle housing and all.

Makes perfect sense. That way he can run histeer arms, and gets the slightly stronger knuckle housing as well. Smart man. The 76-78 knuckle housing sucks! No one makes histeer for it's smaller stud pattern.

my dec78 cruiser has the later knuckles on it. I would make sure that he does not have the wider pattern before you start swapping.

On another note I am taking off my warn hubs to replace them with the asins. One is the older longer style.

Want it?
