: TRE's again.....
scouter77 09-25-2001, 02:47 AM OK it comes time to gather steering parts then brakes and my SOA is ready (FINALLY!). I am shopping for TRE's and material to make the tierod/DL out of... I have come ot the conclusion that hot rolled bar stock will be WAYYYY cheaper than DOM. Anyway I am thinking of using the stock 78 3/4 ton TRE's for the T-rod and one end of the DL. they are 1"x18(not sure?) tpi threads and like .7xx big end taper and .6xx small end taper... Anyway is my setup going to be too big? Is there such a thing as too big on tierods? Mine is staying low (stock location) because I couldnt afford both arms so crossover is mandatory but hi steer has to wait... My main ? is is there too big of a tierod? ALSO anyone know the tapers of the TRE from a stock 72 scout II manual steering pitman arm end TRE??? Thanks any help/opinions would kick arse <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
I want to use the stock 78 3/4 ton TRE's because they are CHEEEEEEEP and plentiful. I was going to do some off the wall thing that would work but give me smaller threads (3/4") but they are double the price each. Plus they had to be shipped in from illinois and south dakota or some weird sh*t.

Ben W 09-25-2001, 11:43 AM I'm not sure what TRE's you are referring to. If you're talking about the chevy 3/4 ton drag link ends, ES2026R and ES2027L, they are 7/8"-18 threads, same as the chevy tie rod ends, but with a bigger taper and more misalignment ability.
The 3/4" TRE's (ES150R & L) can be had for $15 each. My steering uses those and 1.25" solid stress proof for the tie rod & draglink. You are right, solid is much cheaper than tubing.
Here is a picture of the different TRE's.

heres the rest of my highsteer pics

scouter77 09-25-2001, 01:43 PM Right I said it wring. I want to use the draglink ends... Mine are 1" thread diameter though. I measured it twice to make sure. I would like 3/4" dia threads but like I said it is a rare part and cost twice as much. The ones I am talking about look like the ones farthest in the pic you posted. Do they have the 1" shank?
Again w/ my question is there a tierod thats too strong? Do you want it to be the weak link so knuckles and spindles dont break off???

Those 3/4" ends are not rare or expensive. They cost $14.15 here (http://www.stockcarproducts.com/susp8.htm)
and $15.50 here (http://www.afcoracing.com/products/getproduct.cfm?CategoryID=8&ClassID=120&SubclassID=559&ProductID=1499)
You can also get them at any Checker/Schucks/Kragen or Carquest or any other auto parts store for $20 - $25 each. Ask for them by part number, ES150R and ES150L. The common draglink ends (7/8-18) run around $25-$30. I've never heard of a TRE on a 3/4 ton with a 1" thread. What is the part number?
I don't think you'll have to worry about breaking knuckles or spindles unless you are running 40"+ tires and full hydro steering on a D44. Having a strong tie rod isn't going to make you break those parts, having tons of steering power & big tires will.

Jeepdude_Jay and I build them. We sell them for $75 each, if you're interested, email me.

Thanks for all the help <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> I have manual steering and 31" tires LOL for now <IMG SRC="smilies/devil.gif" border="0"> I dont think it will be an issue... I will get those ends and show a pic of the draglink end (on theadjustable end) w/ the 1" shank. If it matters it came off the big model 3/4 ton 78 GM 4wd (obviously) short cab long box truck. I just wanted something beefy enough to not bend like a noodle... Again thanks for all the help <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
scouter77 09-27-2001, 02:35 AM I got the ES150r & l but the taper is wrong. <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0"> It is too small for the hole in the knuckle. The diameter is wrong. I am using the stock GM tierod setup right where it is but bigger rod. I really do appreciate all the help <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

I can use these parts on my draglink but the tierod still needs ends.
Ben W 09-27-2001, 12:24 PM Are you using chevy knuckles or scout knuckles? Is the draglink going to go into the tie rod, or into a highsteer arm.

Chevy knuckles and on am arm <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
Ben W 09-27-2001, 03:04 PM If you're using Chevy knuckles, with the tie rod in the stock location and the draglink is NOT going into the tie rod, try ES2234R and ES2010L. 7/8-18 threads and the large taper that fits the chevy knuckles.
Sorry for the confusion on the ES150. You are right, those have a smaller taper, they fit the scout knuckles. They should work good on your draglink, that is what I am using.
scouter77 09-27-2001, 03:33 PM Thats what I am going to do.. Use on D/L. Anyways Are there any that would use a 3/4" thread? so i dont have to buy 2" bar to make a tierod just curious.

Sorry I didnt clarify the chevy knuckle thing earlier. Why isnt it ES2234R and L or ES2010L and R???
Ben W 09-27-2001, 03:48 PM I don't know of any TRE's that have the larger taper and 3/4 threads. You don't have to use 2" <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> 1.25", or 1.375" or 1.5" should work great.
I don't know why the part numbers are like that. The ES2234R is the stock TRE for an '85 blazer. The other end used on the blazer is ES2233L, but it has a hole in the shank for the steering stabilizer on the Blazer. Some people retaper that hole for a TRE if they are running the draglink into the tie rod. The ES2010L is a Dodge pickup application, I forget what year. It is like an ES2234R, but LH threads. I have no idea why the part numbers don't correspond like the ES150R & L does. I asked for and ES2234L one time and it wasn't listed. You could try it and see if such a thing exists. <IMG SRC="smilies/glasses.gif" border="0">
scouter77 09-27-2001, 04:13 PM If I ever make it up to Washington I am buying you a case of <IMG SRC="smilies/beer.gif" border="0"> and another case for mr. front axle truss. Doubt Tom's would ever make it to him unless he came that day to pick it up <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> but I dont see a reason to go to montana again other than to give him my thanks on helping my project.
Back on topic. I would like to do the tierod tie in for the d/l but its a fullwidth and it would probably hit the spring. I already bought the arm and knuckle too so its better off this way <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> I go to www.cskauto.com (http://www.cskauto.com) to get an idea on pricing and availability. I add around 5-10% for the moog stuff. My original idea was to get dodge 1 ton ends but they ran $70 ea. from napa OUCH! Dodge parts seem to be quite pricy <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">
Ben W 09-27-2001, 04:26 PM Try http://www.rockauto.com They sell moog and you can search by part number.
Just buy another arm for the drivers side then you can put your tie rod up high and put the draglink into it. <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> You're already halfway there!! <IMG SRC="smilies/glasses.gif" border="0">
Out of curiosity where did you get your arm, how much did you pay, and do you have a picture of it?

It looks almost exactly like yours (no pic). I got mine from HeyBeerMan on the board. He lives near me and I posted on a local jeep club e-mail list for a flat top and he said he had one and the arm was a bit extra. total it was $85 I thought it was a really good deal.
