: HELP, one last REAL TIME Turbo 400 Rebuild Question....Left Over Part!?!
dr_claw 12-28-2009, 11:55 AM I posted this in general too, but seeing as how this is the chev forum, I thought you guys could help too....
So I have rebuilt the th400 and things look and feel ok but.....
I started with a clean bench with nothing on it. Now I am finished and I find THIS!!!! I do not remember seeing this at all.
What the hell is this thing?
(It was sitting with the stuff from the back of the case)
Cheers in advance.....

frikenwoodro 12-28-2009, 12:07 PM Idk what that is. Have you looked at a book?
I built my whole trans and looked on the floor where I layed the parts out and there was 2 bands on the floor. I thought I didnt buy 2 of them did I? Then thought of fuck I for got it. had to take it apart again.
mog-10 12-28-2009, 12:32 PM i hate when that happens. good luck
Grumpy_old_fart 12-28-2009, 12:52 PM Ive disassembled a couple hundred th400s over the years... I dont recall seeing that in one.
not that it doesnt exist in one somewhere... parts change.
KWTMECH 12-28-2009, 12:52 PM I don't think I've ever seen anything like that in a t400. Somebody messing with you?
dr_claw 12-28-2009, 12:55 PM no one is messing with me that I know, i don't really think that is possible.
As for the part, there IS ATF on it.
Maybe it hold s a wire or spring???
positrack@earthlink. 12-28-2009, 01:05 PM I rebuilt quite a few TH400s at a past job, and I can't remember ever seeing that part. It has been a looong time though...
I also flipped through my TH400 manual and couldn't find anything like that. Are you sure it came out of the trans? It sort of looks like it might hold one end of a spring or it might be a retainer of some kind. I dunno... :homer:
EDIT: If it DID come out of the trans, it's got to out of the VB/pan area. I can't imagine where else it would go. It surely didn't come out of the bottom (rear) of the case. It couldn't have something to do with the parking pawl/rod/spring could it? Like I said, I can't remember ever seeing one but just engaging in wild, unsupported speculation...:D
Odin K30 12-28-2009, 02:11 PM Looks like a line retainer clip.
Its been awhile but it seems vaguely familiar to me.
Big Red 88 12-28-2009, 04:17 PM i have rebuilt plenty of th400's and have never seen that in one. although it does kinda look like the spring that holds the filter down on a 700r4. my guess is that someone was in it before and didnt like how the filter was loose on the 400 and put that in to hold it down. usually people just put washers or nuts between the vb and filter to hold it steady
dr_claw 12-28-2009, 05:51 PM there were already two washers holding down the filter.
A guy suggested that it could be a reverse wire holder? I think it looks a little sharp to be in contact with a wire.
I have looked at this thing again, NO WITNESS MARKS ?!?
I am baffeled, and I am afraid that if / when I pull the pan, I won't see anything....
dr_claw 12-28-2009, 08:58 PM I am going to stop by a trans shop tomorrow.....
Maybe they have an idea....
TransBuilder 12-28-2009, 09:55 PM All the guys who have "rebuilt lots of TH400s" should know what the part is.
It's a speedo gear retaining clip.
It goes on the output shaft and retains the speedo.
You shouldn't need it on a 4x4 app though.
Big Red 88 12-28-2009, 11:49 PM youre right it is!!!! sorry i am an idiot:confused:, i was looking at the mm thinking inches and thinking that it was way too long for that, as speedo clips arent 2.5 inches long... i guess i should have looked at the pic a moment or two longer
Grumpy_old_fart 12-29-2009, 08:18 AM d'oh! Ima Dork...
the hole is what threw me.
dr_claw 12-29-2009, 09:40 AM YAY! THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!
I was going to pull the pan in an hour or so!
CHEERS!!!!
