just wondering if anyone on here has delt with this. Ive been thru 2 flywheels and 2 starters on my 69 396. no matter how i shim it. eventually the flywheel and starter get tore up. does anyone know if you can only run a 168 tooth flywheel on a bigblock? or can i try a 153 tooth flywheel. is there a difference in sbc flywheels and bbc flywheels?? i dont have a sbc one to compare to mine. thanks

First of all, unless you've switched to a manual trans, you don't have a flywheel, you have a flexplate. I don't recall how a 396 is balanced, internally or externally, that would be a major factor, but when I put the 502 in my 1-ton, I was able to use the small block flexplate, but my small block had a funky flexplate for the 85lb torque convertor for my 4L80E trans.

Just go down to Autozone and tell them you need a flexplate for a 396 big block in a '67 FJ40 with air conditioning, power steering, and poop on the seat, they should have one in stock. Get in the 'zone!

396's are internally balanced. So, any pre '86 small block flexplate will work, as long as it isn't from a 400SB.

Yeah, what he said. Flywheels/flexplates are interchangeable with the exceptions of the 400 SB and the 454 BB {both of which are externally balanced}.....I don't know on the the 502.....{wish I had some personal experience, however}
