: 400M with Holly double-pumper?
greaser 10-01-2002, 08:48 PM I have a 400M in my 79 bronco that seems to be underfed. It has a 650 cfm edelbrock carb with an electric choke. When I floor it, the engine slowly gets up to about 2500 rpm before shifting. If I were to replace the carb with a doublepumper, would the engine get better throttle response of simply get flooded? Thanks
jopes 10-01-2002, 09:38 PM sounds like you have other problems than not getting gas. what about the cat under it?
greaser 10-02-2002, 12:43 PM It currently doesn't have any cat's installed, they're gonna get on next week to pass emissions. I'm thinking I might have a bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter or something of that nature. could that be the problem? I have had the truck only about a month and haven't had time to go through everything yet. Is this a good starting point? thanks
LeviGarrett76 10-04-2002, 01:04 AM is the 400 stock, have you ever tuned on the edelbrock? could be a simple jet change or rod change, or somehtin could be clogged......

I just bought the bronco last month. The guy that had it before me said the engine was balanced and blueprinted 50,000 miles ago. I haven't tuned the carb yet, how do I do this? I have the pamphlet that came with the carb with some suggestions, but haven't tried any of that yet. I will definitely check into that. Here's what it's doing:
When I start it 1st thing in the morning, it kicks over immediately and runs out of fuel right after. I then have to keep cranking the engine for about 10 seconds until more fuel gets to the carb, then it starts. When I put it in reverse, it will almost stall out, then start moving. When I put it in drive following reverse, it drops down in rpm's some, but goes. It then tends to almost stall out whenever I start from a stop until the engine gets to about 180 degrees, then it runs pretty good. I have adjusted the air fuel mixture, but could probably make it more rich. I am planning on replacing all fuel filters and whatever lines might be clogged. Any other ideas?
LeviGarrett76 10-04-2002, 02:00 PM i wonder how old that carb is, change the fuel filter first, set the idle mixture with a vacuum gauge(stop at the highest vauum reading), then see how she runs, if that dont fix it, it could be your accel pump,
has it always ran like this? or did it just start?

I've only had it a month, so I don't know how old the carb is or how long it's been running like this. I'm also going to replace the plugs and do an oil change. The wires look good, I don't know about the distributor yet. Anyways, I will let you know what I find. Thanks for the help
LeviGarrett76 10-05-2002, 03:21 PM no prob
greaser 10-05-2002, 06:49 PM 79F250, what all did you do to "build" your 460? Is it EFI? I'm thinking about getting a junkyard 460 and rebuilding it with a good 30 over kit, what do you think? What are some good building ideas for a 460 or even my 400? Thanks
LeviGarrett76 10-06-2002, 01:10 PM there is a good article oon the buildup of a 400 that hot rod magazine did in "98, they got 380 hp and 468 ft lbs for cheap. Someone on here must have it
my 460 is built for mid-high end power to get me through mud
its just a 71 460 with DOVE-c heads
for the details on it, go here
http://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/displayalbum.php?&albumid=553
it puts out about 460-470 hp and around 540 ft lbs of torque, but like i said, under 1800 rpm she aint good for too much you could make your 400 a torque monster.....

This idea sounds GREAT to me! How could i get that article? Do you have the issue? If so, I could order that issue from hot rod magazine, right? That would be much better considering I'm having to spend $500 to get this 400 to pass emissions (smog pump, pulley, hoses, valves, and cats). Anyways, please let me know what you can find about that buildup and THANKS again for your help!
jopes 10-07-2002, 02:34 PM I have the article in jpg format.
email me if you would like a copy of it. I am doing about the same engine in my 78 bronco except a dual profile cam for it instead of thier single profile.

I think you were lied to, nobody "balanced and blueprinted" a 400, a lot of people don't even know what the tearm means.
Anyway, You have a bad or misadjusted choke on your carb
jopes 10-17-2002, 02:14 PM I am getting my 400 balanced. phewy on the blueprinting.
