Well the wife's pissed, the Scout doesn't run, what was I thinking? I tried to do an R/R on my T-case last night, in 2 hours? I put together a new twin stick case, using sticks, and shift bars from an old Dana 20, and all the rest from an extra SII Dana 20. The case looks great, shifts well, but with one person I just did not have enough time to complete the job. Hopefully I can complete it tonight and be back on the road.

can relate - I learned to always estimate at least double what I think it will take. Now, that my wife has started doing some of the work on her rig, she has learned to appreciate the challaenges of estimating these little projects.

You'll have it back on the road soon.

Did you have the "new" 'case all set n' ready to go and just need to swap it in, or did you try to actually *do* the twin-stick and put it back in in a night?

I'm pretty good at R&Ring t'cases now.. might not get the front driveshaft reinstalled (I hate that thing..) but one 'case out, one 'case in.. easy.

2hrs? Hmmm.. mebbe.

Why did you have just two hours? I work until the task is done or until I'm in danger of hurting myself.

Estimating.. ROFL.. "Oh, it shouldn't take long.." bzzzztt. I think my GF's onto that ploy.. LOL.

We're going to Herculine her 800 this weekend - she gets to do most of the prep work while I do more wiring in the new shop - she'll get a taste for "time estimation" alright.

Think 1 gallon will be 'nuff? Also need to line the new rollbar, but maybe not this weekend. I have to drop the tanks still before the 'bar can go in..

Winter is approaching and the time for a topless 800 is drawing to a close!

No I had the case already to go. I'm just slow, and I need a better jack. Thats what killed me not having a quality jack. It's time to invest in a quality jack. I ended up using my hoist to raise up the t-case, then I ran into clearance problems with the sticks which required a little cutting. This was already three hours into it and the wife was Plus in the middle of the project I had to stop and login to work to complete some after hours work for two hours.

I only use my hoist/jack for the transmission.. for the t'case, I just lie under the rig, drag the heavy POS onto my chest, wait a few moment, then heave-ho and try not to drop it.

First time I had to replace the 'case I was 120 miles from home lying in the street - I had my 1/2" and 9/16" wrench, some RTV and some gear oil. Heave-ho was all I had.

Tom, depending on how much area you cover in herculiner you will need a gallon and a quart. I did all of my tub, except where i need the tub welded back together and used up all of the gallon and part of the quart.

I think the plan is to do the entire S800 tub.

Just need to yank the front seats and start scuffing/wire-wheeling/chemically cleaning - the rest of the interior has been gutted.

Start on the firewall and head back to the tailgate, up both sides, too.

Did you do the side-rails (top of the quarters) or leave those as-is?

This 800 doesn't need ANY rust cut n' patched (at least, none that I've found yet). There are a few dents that could use some work, but no rust to speak of - and the Herculiner is going in to make sure it STAYS that way.

I'll tell her to get the extra quart - and we'll make sure the rollbar is ready for the left-overs.

Herc is on sale for $80 for the gallon with another $20 rebate still..

Thanks,

-Tom

i didn't get all of the firewall, but did go all the way up the sides of the tub and up the sides of the quaters. i used the top flange where the top mounts as a guide when i did those sides. i go the gallon and quart herc kit from sam's club for $86 after tax. did the driver side seat frame too.

I tried a couple of different positions to lift the T-Case up and in. I did not try pressing it off my chest, there was simply not enough room for me to lie on my back and lift it in place. I guess next time I'll put the front end on the ramps, which should give me enough room to press it in place.

Got Lift?

Even with my 4" lift on "Tigger" it can sometimes be a pain to get enough room. When I first put the (close ratio) T19 in I actually jacked up each corner of the Scout and slid some spare rims under each tire for more working room underneath. Nice n' sturdy, and cheap, too.

With enough lift and big 'nuff tires, it's not really necessary now.

I bet Scoutillac has a hard time bench pressing his t'case in - mostly because he has to stand up to reach it..

Ouch! When we stuck the T19/D20 in the neighbors Scout 800 we jsut unbolted the top and lifted the tranny-tcase with the engine hoist. But that's the easy way

That works great in a Scout but not in a Scout II. Maybe on the project SII I'll make the floor bolt in. Then I would have all the access I need.

I got it!! The new T-case is in. Works like a champ, I cruised the hood in 2-lo front wheel drive. And my front locker is working correctly, guess those spacers were needed Wife is still PO'd but oh well. The setup looks factory, I just need to locate two balls for the shifters, any ideas?

Mine came from a Scout 80 or 800. ;-)

Actually, you can just about do that with a SII. That's how I've done 'em when I can.

I drag the T19 under the Scout, then roll my hoist over and lower a chain through the trans tunnel cover opening and lift the T19 up into place.

Still takes some man handling to get the input shaft to line up (which is why I recommended earlier that the bellhousing be bolted to the engine FIRST - that much less "nose" to swing about).

That's how I've pulled the 3spd, installed the close 4spd, and installed the wide 4spd into my '77.

On the other rig with the tilt front clip I just roll the hoist up to the front and pull everything as a unit - but that's like cheating.
