Which would be better in a DD and mud? I know that the AW71L is the hd version of the AW70L and that the AW72L has lower 1st gear and a higher ratio 4th gear. But with the power of the 1.3 or 1.6 engines which would be a better way to go? I know that Samicrawl has done a lot of investigation of these things and would like his input as well as others that are in the know!

i am still researching and talking to a tranny friend of mine on what might work better in my rig with the 16v . the aws also came in several different toyotas including some landcruisers known as a43s, but not sure of all the spects on them yet or the good and bad. or how well they are to adapt. i found allot of info when i googled volvo aw71 and on turbobricks volvo forum.including allot of performance mods.my tranny guy said to go with the lockup for sure for a dd there is no big advantage of the 72l

find any good info let me know.:)

Aren't the A45DLs the same as the AW72Ls except being a Toyota. I was thinking that 4th gear in the 72L might be better as the engine might not have to work so hard at reasonable road speeds?

I did a ton of research on this, I am 'zooky' on zuwharrie. I think either 'L' transmission (71 or 72) would be fine. You definitly want the 'L' so you can use the tracker torque converter. The Volvo transmissions are a better choice then the Toyota version because of the shorter output shaft and it's flanged. Which T-case are you going with?

Probably going to use a tracker doubler to sami t-case

I've looked into this too. There is an adapter inbetween the tracker 4-speed and T-case that will bolt to the volvo transmission, so no other adapters are needed to physically install a tracker doubler. The problem you are going to have is that the transmission output splines wont match up to the tracker T-case. The tracker (4-speed) output and volvo outputs are not interchangable because the volvo output had a govenor that the electronically controlled tracker transmission does not have. The way I was going to get around this was to have the volvo output shortened and resplined. That shouldnt be a big deal, the shaft is pretty easy to get out.
If you ever decided to upgrade to a 22R all you have to do is swap on a toyota bellhousing

Damn, I forgot the adapter. Have to go back to the salvage yard.
