: Daily Topic - Rust - 10/18
jdjanda 10-18-2001, 12:19 AM Let's here it guys, how have you repaired your rust damage. How will you prevent more rust in the future.
I am of the mind to cut and replace any rust damaged areas. Tons of under coating in blind areas, I am also considering the undercoating kit from Eastwood for all the blind pockets. Bed liner for the internal cab area.

Scout Dude 10-18-2001, 06:29 AM The only major rust I have is in floor boards. The pass side body mount semi-collasped (sp?) before I bought it and I still have not fixed it. Right where it bolts in, the floor board cracked and rusted through. On the driver side, when I took out the factory seat mount, there was alot of pitting under it. As soon as my seats are mounted into my cage, the floor is getting ripped out and I'm redoing it with 11 gauge (1/8") plate.
As for fixing it in the future...I going to use one of the many bedliner products available.
Cliffy [JD] 10-18-2001, 07:19 AM I'm going to be cutting out any exterior body rust that I can, and leaving it out.
for rust in places that I can't just leave off, I will either be forming my own replacement pieces, or where I can't do that I will buy replacement pieces.
I do however have a good buddy who's a professional bodyman and he can help me make any complicated pieces.
Old Scout 10-18-2001, 07:50 AM I went the easy route.
I bought a good running 79 with dents and rot for 700.00
<IMG width=600 height=415 SRC="http://www.pirate4x4.com/ubb/uploads/Scout3.jpg">
Then bought a perfect 72 half cab 4x2 for 300. and swapped the body.

No rust is easy! and cheap! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
Zane Znamenacek 10-18-2001, 07:55 AM Rust in the rear quarters -> Went to fiberglass
Rust in the floor board body mounts -> Bought replacements and stuck em in
I also just discovered that my rocker panels are rotted out under the paint. My plan to fix this is to cut out the rotten outside and bottom pieces (the vertical back piece seems ok) and weld in a piece of 3" square tube. That will fix my rust problem and also give me bash proof rockers. We'll see how it goes...
scoutman 10-18-2001, 08:58 AM most of the rust on my '66 was in the floorboards, but luckly it was not very deep or bad. Wire brushed it and then put herculiner on it. Some exterior rust, but not much, mainly starting to rust in the paint scratches and such.
Hey Monster-Z where in Golden are you? I go to Mines, and my '66 is Viper Red/ F@$d white top. Drop me an email man so we can get together.
just finished stripping the interior(yikes),floor boards, passenger body mount, rear floor behind the wheels and lots of rust around spare tire mount, plus the usual bits on the quarters.Rockers and door posts are good.
Going to use replacement panels for the front floors, make something up for the cargo floor, not to sure about spare tire area yet(any suggestions?),new body mounts on front(both sides),sawzall on the quarters.
Not to sure about what to use for rustproofing,I like the idea of"herculiner" type products but am concerned that would be a PITA down the road for working on.What did ya'll do??
nwmud 10-18-2001, 12:00 PM I'm with Old Scout on this one.
I am using my 76 frame and running gear, and my 71 Half Cab tub and motor. This will be a great rig when I'm done.

TERRA-IZER 10-18-2001, 08:40 PM I have done about 6 scouts that needed floors, outer/inner rockers, body mounts and 1/4's. To keep then lasting long, i allways give them a good coat of epoxy primer before i put them on, use weld through primer where they will be welded, and once installed give the top sides a good top coat, and the undersides some spray on bedlinner. And for 1/4's i prefere the fiberglass, they are just as strong as the steal (my Terra laid on its left 1/4 for 15 min and it was only scratched) they all so last longer and easier to fix. It easier to start with a cleaner tub though if you can find one
REDDMANIAC 10-19-2001, 01:03 AM Had replaced ScoutII cargo floor w/diamond plate & now onto the rockers, waiting for them from ATSCOUTS. Then maybe the front cab mounts. So far just used undecoating.
Hayraker 10-19-2001, 01:22 PM Previous owner of mine did a lot of rust *repair* (covered it up) on mine with some kind of fiber glass. Looks like it was a pretty professional job, even put a pearl coat paint job on it.
The only problem is the first time I bashed the rear quarter panel it collapsed, big old plates of fiber glass came loose and you could see daylight thru the rust pits on the steel.
Got a collapsed front body mount too.
But good floorboards, if you dont count cracks at the door jam.
I think I will wait for the tub to just come apart & fall off the frame, <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> at least it will be lighter then.

That's what I was thinking..
I figure by the time it's bad enough for that, I'll be a good enough wheeler to go with some type of rock buggy style body, with scraps of sheetmetal for a body. <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">
