: steering problem

I bought a xj wheeled it some and then noticed i have no steering if the motor isnt running it steers great when the pump is moving but if its not running the steering wheel turns and turns and doesnt turn the steering box its not slipping at the box somewhere above that anyone know what part it is thats bad

Probably Bacon grease in the Pan joint inside the firewall.

That very well could be it, but it sounds more like the bacon bearings on the sector gear to me.

Must be an issue with the dynamic coupler. XJ's use a fluid dynamic viscous coupler on their steering arm. When it wears out it only makes a good connection when pressurised by the steering pump. You'll have to rebuild it if you want it to work with power steering pump not running. You can swap the entire column out for one off of a 2000 XJ, it was the only year not to have that.
