I finally bought my second IH last night <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">, a 71 800b with a 304 and a 4-speed (T-18?). The wierd thing is that it leaks coolant from the bottom of the bellhousing at a pretty good rate. I looked everything over and couldn't see any leaking anywhere else on the back or top of the engine. Any ideas what the problem could be? Is there a freeze plug back there?

Yup there are freeze pulgs behing the BH. Good news there cheap, but a ton of work to remove the trans/tc to repair.

Personaly, the best advice I could give is to remove the engine and remove and replace ALL the freeze plug. When one goes, the rest *usually* arn't far behind.

Don't forget about the 5 or so under the intake manifold <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

There's a missing one visible in this pic - just above the "closest" arm of the stand there's a hole.

Can't get the buggers into the block while it's on the stand - I had to drive 'em in after it was back on the hoist and ready to get dropped into place.

OK, thanks for the info. guys. I think I'll fill it up with water and do one last check to make double sure the leak is only inside the BH, then I'll plan on pulling the engine.

One thing the guy I bought this Scout from said is that *most* of the freeze plugs were replaced in the near past. I highly doubt the inaccessable ones behind the BH were included in the project, so this goes along with what RustoleumWhite says about all the plugs failing at once.
