: "Shot in the Dark" Leaf Spring Question
axisT6 01-04-2010, 09:58 AM I just finished installing a D60 in the front of my 95 C1500. The truck sits higher and rides a lot more firm than expected as seen here. Those are 37" MTRs.

I used 54" Tahoe leafsprings up front with leaves added to make a 7 leaf packs.
I plan to remove the shortest leaf on the bottom of the packs. How effective to you think this will be in lowering the truck and improving the ride?

By the way those blocks on the bottom of the springs are bolted to the spring packs and move the axle 2" forward.
gmcxt 01-04-2010, 10:04 AM Id pull more than 1 leaf.... maybe two.
TAWL_BOY 01-04-2010, 10:20 AM You can ditch the zero rate, unless it's there to make your perch match the height of one that sits on the chunk.

I have those on both sides. I needed them to move the axle forward enough so that the drag link cleared the engine crossmember, and so that I wouldn't eat firewall when the suspension is compressed.
Leyland 01-04-2010, 10:49 AM I would also ditch the zero rate and start by remove 1 leaf, probably worth modifying the fenders, firewall and properly notch the cross member for clearance rather than have the zero rate...
glenns89 01-04-2010, 07:40 PM The Tahoe springs are an offset center pin to start with. Do you have the 25.5 inch side toward the front? You could move the front perch foreward two more inches if this is an issue. Then you would be able to ditch the zero rate and take out a spring or two.
74beater 01-04-2010, 08:34 PM I got a set of 40" mtr that would look great on that truck. What part of Texas?

Negative sir. The tahoe springs are centered.
All, thanks for the replys. I sourced a set of 52" chevy rears. These springs alone will move the axle 1" forward. I also drilled the axle perches for an additional inch so basically I can still locate the axle in the same place and ditch the relocation blocks.
52" Chevy rears are centered right?

Oooh that is tempting. Do they fit a 17" rim? If so how much do you want? I am located in Cypress TX btw.
reddwarf 01-05-2010, 05:51 AM Removing only the bottom leaf is not going to have a very big effect on the height or the ride.
Truck doesn't look all that bad, just looks like it needs those bigger tires. That can help with the ride too, if you run a little bit lower pressure in the bigger tires
TAWL_BOY 01-05-2010, 06:19 AM I live right inside the beltway on 290.
There are a lot of wheelers in NW Houston.

I bought a WTO steering box from you. Hows the knee?

I don't think I elaborated on the stiffness. If I hit a speed bump at 10MPH, the front end catches air and rattles my kidneys out of my tater shoot.

Oh yeah. I remember.
After 4 surgeries and almost 4 years time, the knee's doin' OK.

Yes
axisT6 01-05-2010, 11:29 AM Yes
Thanks.

1400 with a set of h2, just a hour and a half up 290
trkklr77 01-06-2010, 12:02 AM i would pull the 2 that you added, looks liek #2-4 or 3-4 from the top down.

Wow, that is a great price. Unfortunately it is a little more than I can spend right now given the other things I have going on. Thanks though.

From the top down, the leaves I added were #3, #5, and #7. I was thinking of removing the shorter leaves first, but as things work out, I sourced a set of 52" rears. These springs will allow me to get rid of the relocations blocks while keeping the same forward mounting position.
I will post pics after I lower the truck.

Cool
axisT6 01-11-2010, 06:07 AM OK fixed it. I freshened up a set of 52s (poly bushings) and installed them. Of course, before I could do that, I had to get the bottom half of the engine crossmember removed and replace my bent ORD draglink with a straight one.
Here is a pic of the bottom half of the engine crossmember gone and the new draglink.

52s in.

Here is the new stance.

The truck is down about 3" in the front. The ride is better as well. Also, this swap made me very glad that I used DIY4X's multi-position spring hangers on my shackle brackets. When I put the 52s in, I had to move the shackle to the forward most position. This picture shows where the shackle was with my old 54s.

Thanks for all of your input.
vic_v8 01-11-2010, 09:21 AM you left the overloads in?
axisT6 01-11-2010, 10:12 AM you left the overloads in?
Yes I did. I don't have bumpstops.
