Hey Guys,
Don't kill me here, but I'm putting a D44 from a scout into my TJ and I was wondering if you guys had some info on building it up.
I'm not sure the year, but it's got 2 Piece Axles and Drum Brakes.
I was wondering if you could give some tips on builindg it up. Oh, do you guys know if moser makes a 1 piece for it and maybe a company that has disk brake conversions?

I'm not sure if you need to change the housing end out to run a regular flanged axle or not (I doubt it, but..)
You may or may not need a new carrier to allow for 30sp 'shafts and the spiders to go with 'em.
TSM (The Streetrod Mfg) sells a rear disc kit that would work - particularly with new flanged axles.
I bet Moser or anyone else would make 'em to length.
The tapered axle is probably from a 66-71 Scout 800 (800, 800A, 800B) - a little narrower than a SII (71-80) rear end. The SII rears are 2" wider and have 30sp 1.31" flanged axles among other things.

You are going to spend a lot of money on that axle trying to make it into a Scout II Dana 44, I.E. one piece axles, and 30 spline inners. Tom is right the older axles are only 2 inches wider, you could sell your current rear end to a Scout 80/800 owner for a $100, more if it has a Power-Loc. You might be better off finding a Dana 44 from a Scout II. The are a couple of shops in OR that deal with Scouts, MR. Scout comes to mind. You should be able to pick up a Scout II rear fairly cheap, a hell of a lot cheaper than converting the older 19 sp Scout 800 axle. Post in the wanted section for a Scout II Dana 44, some one will have one cheap, don't pay more than $200 for a good clean axle. Most of the Scout II axles will have 3.54's or 3.73's RP's with a Trac-Loc, dump the Trac-Loc, for a Detroit or open carrier with an lunch box locker. The Scout II drums after 74 or 75 are larger than the earlier and should do a decent job of stooping, TSM makes a complete bolt in rear disk kit for around 5 bills, or you can make your own for a lot less.
